When Kelly Clarkson won the first season of American Idol at the age of 20, she had no idea that in just a few years she would be one of the most popular singers worldwide, honored with numerous accolades for her work in music.
But here she is today, twenty years later, enjoying the fruits of her hard work over the years, and even having her own talk show since 2019.
In the Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer has often expressed her admiration for the late Whitney Houston. She even covered Saving All My Love For You in one of the episodes.
But Clarkson doesn’t miss a chance to show that she’s a fan of other superstar singers. That’s why she chose to perform I Will Always Love You during the ACM Awards.
The song, first recorded in 1973 by the iconic Dolly Parton, became a success, but was taken to a whole different level of epicness when it was recorded by Whitney Houston for the movie The Bodyguard.
Clarkson, who is a fan of both these singers, decided to sing this song as a tribute to them.
As you can see in the video, she appears on stage wearing a black-velvet, long-sleeved gown, making her look extra elegant, chic, and sexy at the same time.
But the amazing part starts when she starts singing. From the very first lyrics, it is obvious that this performance will go down in history.
The audience can’t help cheering at first, and then they all sing along with Clarkson. Her performance has definitely touched everyone’s heart.
Her flowless performance, her not missing a tone, and her confident presence are reminders of why this woman has gotten so far in her career.
Dolly Parton, who took the stage when the song right after the song ended, gave the young singer a tight hug.
“Oh my, God, that was so great!” Parton exclaimed. “That’s so great, Kelly. I know that Whitney (Houston) is smiling down on us tonight. Thank you very much … I was backstage trying not to cry my false eyelashes off.”
The 76-year-old country star went on to say “That just topped it off for me,” before announcing Miranda Lambert as entertainer of the year.
Clarkson’s rendition of the popular song was uploaded on YouTube, and it has amassed about a million views and 26k likes within the first two days.
Social media users are loving the singer’s performance and they didn’t miss the chance to write positive comments below the video.
“This is the definition of ” Less is more!”, people! Been following her for more than 15 years and still, she never ceases to amaze me,” someone wrote, while another one commented: “She kept the sweetness of Dolly’s version, while including the power of Whitney’s version, and all while making this performance distinctly Kelly. Just stunning.”
