We often associate Christmas with happy and joyous festivities.
The Christmas air always brings jolly times for everyone to the kids and kids-at-heart. The snow, the lights, the carols, and jingle bells.
All of this makes us giddy.
But not everyone.
Not all of us realize it can be a sad and lonely time for others.
Some might find Christmas the most challenging time of the year. While others celebrate with family and friends, some people find the loneliness unbearable.
Maybe they lost a loved one or went through a bad breakup or divorce.
This was something that Kelly Clarkson felt when she wrote her latest Christmas single.
A Christmas anthem for the hurting
The multi-Grammy singer has had a rough past couple of years. In June last year, she filed for divorce from her husband of almost seven years and former manager, Brandon Blackstock.
It was finalized, and they were declared legally divorced in August. We know breakups are tough, and Kelly found comfort in writing a song about it.
Lyrics that twinge the heart with truth
The song is not with anger or vengeance, but you can feel the sadness and pain. The way she sang it added to all the feels this song sends us.
She performed Merry Christmas (To the One I Used to Know) in her show.
It’s an emotional song.
During her Christmas special titled ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ for The Kelly Clarkson Show, she said an idea came upon her after she tucked her children to sleep.
She thought that there were very few songs about having a tough Christmas.
But Christmas is tough on many.
One song she thought of was Dolly Parton’s ‘Hard Candy Christmas,’ which she loves.
Considering what she’s been through, writing a sad Christmas song may be challenging, but it is a great idea to pen down her feelings.
Kelly stood behind the mic in her sparkly dress as the band cued the song’s beginning.
She glittered like Christmas morning.
You can feel all the emotions from the first verse until the chorus. It sometimes feels like she’s about to cry as she sings the song.
People on YouTube felt this, too.
Many shared how it brought them to tears.
What they often mentioned was the line: “But Christmas eve, my gift to me is dancing with your ghost.”
They feel like this is one line that wraps up all the emotions of the song; that instead of wanting to turn back time, you just long for that feeling of being with that person you lost.
Others thanked Kelly for her relatability.
They felt pulled in by her lyrics that are all too relatable for many people during the Christmas season.
A couple or more people said they’re also going through a divorce and how difficult this Christmas is for them.
There are (now) single mothers who also found it difficult to grasp the thought of their kids spending Christmas with a broken family.
So this Christmas, let’s be extra kind.
We’ve been through a rough year, and others have had it tougher. Let’s still spread the love by recognizing that others don’t have it all too easy, and show them that they are not alone.
We bet that can light up their Christmas.
