There are only a few instances in life when famous musicians invite their fans on-stage for spontaneous collaborations.
These moments always make concerts more memorable, and they usually result in some pretty incredible performances.
In some cases, the pressure gets to whichever fan is invited onstage, which causes the whole band to underperform.
In other cases, there are also times where the fans blow everyone’s mind after turning in a spectacular performance all their own. As it turns out, this video is one of those kinds of performances.
This guy and his girlfriend were avid country music fans.
Before Rob Joyce’s name was heard throughout the world, he was just a hardcore fan of Keith Urban.
For those who don’t know, Urban is a New Zealander-Australian singer-songwriter and record producer, performing country music.
One day, Joyce went to his first Urban concert in 2008 with his girlfriend, who was a fan of opener Carrie Underwood.
Rob and his girlfriend scribbled, “it’s my boyfriend’s birthday” and “can I play your guitar?” on their two tickets. Miraculously, their strategy! Halfway through the show, Urban invited Joyce onstage.
After introducing Joyce to the crowd, both of them decided to play “Good Thing.”
“Good Thing” is Urban’s single from his 2013 album Fuse. The song is famous to country music fans for its upbeat melody and cheeky lyrics. When they were both on-stage, Urgan gave Joyce his guitar.
Joyce started playing the intro of the song and Urban was just surprised by how proficient he was on the guitar.
The crowd is absolutely bursting with energy after they see Joyce shredding on Urban’s guitar! He maintained the audience’s hype by also singing the song alongside Joyce. It was amazing that they were so in sync—you would think Joyce was already playing full time with the band!
Still, Joyce’s spotlight shined brighter as he crushed the guitar solo part of the song.
The epic performance was far from over.
As they got to the guitar solo, Joyce blasted away on the electric guitar with overflowing passion. “He killed it,” Urban said as Joyce slowly walked down and off the stage. After the show, Urgan could not move on from how unbelievable the kid was. He even recorded a shout-out clip dedicated to Rob Joyce and uploaded it on the internet. What a way to celebrate your birthday!
Since the performance happened, Joyce’s YouTube channel blew up with views and subscribers—and since then, he and his girlfriend Lex moved to Nashville to pursue music.
According to Joyce, the move from Boston was “crazy and abrupt.”
Even so, he says that he and his girlfriend adjusted to life in Nashville after a while and started making contacts in the city. As it turns out, that experience at Urban’s concert was huge for Joyce:
“I walked out of the arena saying, ‘Ok, that is what I want to do for the rest of my life.'”
Joyce planned to move out to Music City in September that year to pursue a career as a touring guitarist and a country singer.
As this story shows, all it takes is one moment to turn your life around.
In his case, Rob Joyce took his shot, jumped on-stage with Keith Urban and told the whole world his name through his guitar. Judging from this performance, it definitely paid off!
