Of all the classic rock bands, Fleetwood Mac is one of the most universally beloved.
Though the group went through many iterations throughout the years, the iconic lineup of Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and Lindsey Buckingham.
Their self-titled album and their follow-up “Rumours” were both smash hits, the first going platinum seven times and the second going ten times platinum. Needless to say, the singles from these albums are immediately recognizable and emotional.
And as such, they’ve been covered and interpreted many, many times over.
Still, covering one of these songs can be a challenge—particularly if the performer doesn’t bring something unique to it.
Fortunately, one performer on The Voice managed that task with aplomb. The performance we’re discussing took place on the show’s 2018 season.
Like all the other auditions on the show, it began with the judges’ backs turned to the stage for a blind audition. A moment later, the woman in question starts playing a delicate piano melody that the judges recognize immediately.
The song she’s singing is “Rihannon” by Fleetwood Mac.
Although the original song is more of a hard-hitting ballad, the version she sings is much softer and more unique!
As she sings, all the judges exchange looks with each other because she’s such a good singer and her interpretation is so singular. All the while. judges Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson seem particularly taken with it.
Everyone waits until the very last moment to make any decisions… and then both Shelton and Hudson hit their buzzers to turn around!
When it’s all over, the crowd gives her a huge round of applause.
Although only two of the judges turned around, the other two weren’t able to because of the rules of the show.
As judge Adam Levine says to her right away, her performance was good enough to earn a four-chair turn. The performer introduces herself as Katrina Cain and says that she lives in Denton, Texas.
Before long, Shelton and Hudson are competing with one another for Cain’s talents. After Shelton says his piece, Hudson explains that although she’s not from Texas, she has a diverse array of musical talents that might be a better fit for Cain’s talents.
At the very end, it’s time for Cain to decide who’s team she’s going to join.
After a few moments of deliberation, Cain finally decides… that’s she’s going to go with Shelton!
Needless to say, Shelton couldn’t be happier when he gets the news. Although The Voice has had all kinds of incredible performances over the years, something about Cain’s performance is really special. While the original Fleetwood Mac version of the song is definitely still emotional, it has a much more upbeat and danceable vibe to it.
In her version, she cuts right to the core of the emotion and even changes a lot of the melodic flourishes! Though it’s been said before, a successful audition is about more than just talent. Sometimes it takes the right song with the right delivery!
Congratulations to Katrina Cain on an amazing performance! Be sure to watch the whole thing in the clip below:
