There’s nothing quite like music to soothe the soul. With everyone’s lives turned upside down, a beautiful song can help life spirits. That’s especially true with one so memorable as “Hallelujah.” Written by a Canadian singer by the name of Leonard Cohen, people first heard it when it was released in 1984 on his Various Positions album.
But from there, it was recorded by John Cale and then by Jeff Buckley. Since that time, multiple other artists have performed their rendition of this song. Despite the name, it’s categorized as a secular hymnal. When it was featured in the Shrek movie in 2001, its popularity skyrocketed.
It’s a touching song
Hallelujah is a soulful song, one filled with emotion. A lot of people don’t know it’s about a horrific ending to a love shared by two people. But with several Biblical references throughout that give it a religious undertone, it’s ideal for both Christian and secular artists.
The right artist
Regardless of the back story, it takes the right voice to pull off such a powerful song. The artist, whether male or female, must have a smooth and convincing tone. They have to sing from the heart rather than from lyrics written on sheet music.
Katherine (Kat) McPhee is perfect
First discovered while competing on American Idol, the world fell in love with her immediately. Every song she performed was special. When listening to her impeccable voice, you’d almost hold your breath in fear of missing a single note.
A new partnership
After American Idol, Katherine got married. Unfortunately, that marriage didn’t last. But her future husband would soon sweep her off her feet. Not only was David a mentor to her while she was on the show but he also accompanied one of her performances by playing the piano. The two had an instant connection.
An unlikely pair
Initially, David Foster was married to someone else. Then there was the fact that he was 35 years older than Kat. After his divorce, they began dating in early spring of 2017. By June of 2019, the two were married.
Unrivaled talent
Without question, Kat is one of the most recognized vocalists around the world. And David is a musical genius. He plays the piano, sings, and has written a ton of songs for top movie hits. Combined, the pair offers something unique…just what the world needs right now.
Recording at home
During the pandemic, Kat and David decided to perform via YouTube from the privacy and comfort of their home. For the past month, they’ve shared many different songs. Even though they’re not in a professional studio, the sound quality is still outstanding.
The Hallelujah song
Among their many choices… Hallelujah. This particular song resonates with people of all ages. It might be somewhat melancholy but it makes people feel good. It gives them hope that soon, the world will return to normal.
Why are they doing this?
At the start of the video, David tells viewers, “We’re new at this. We’re going to be coming to you every day.” That’s when Kat chimes in to explain why they decided to do this. “Cause we’re bored! But we’re sticking with the program for the greater good.” You have to love her honesty and dedication.
Making beautiful music together
While many artists have done a spectacular job singing this song, perhaps this is one of the best. It’s raw but mesmerizing. With David playing the piano ad Kat belting out the lyrics using her amazing voice, it’s hard not to watch their video over and over again.
Viewers couldn’t wait to comment
In response to them doing the Hallelujah song, people flooded their YouTube channel with comments. One poster said, “So happy I came here, we need this during this time of uncertainty. Music is very healing.”
Another person had this to say, “You guys are so adorable! Made my day!” Then this poster shared, “Too much talent all in one house! Love it when David sings. Those harmonies! We need more!”
