If you’re a fan of musical competition shows, know that it doesn’t get much better than The Voice.
While there are plenty of shows like American Idol that are relatively straightforward, The Voice adds all kinds of its own twists and turns. Instead of having contestants appear directly before the judges, each one has to do a “blind audition.”
This means that the judges backs are turned and they can’t see who is performing each song. Still, if they like what they hear, they can hit their buzzers to turn around and compete to have the contestant on their team.
Needless to say, that structure allows for some pretty fun and surprising auditions.
Beyond that, The Voice also has all manner of international versions of the show as well.
Though we’re mostly familiar with the American version of the show, it all actually started in Holland.
Still, there are more versions of The Voice than there seem to be of practically any other show—and this audition in particular came from the Australian version. Like any other version of the show, the contestant steps out onstage while the judges backs are turned.
After just a moment, the backing music plays to James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World.”
From the very beginning, contestant Karise Eden lets out an incredible run of first notes.
A moment later, judge Keith Urban has a look of utter disbelief on his face as he smashes his buzzer to turn around in mere seconds. Right on the tail of that, the three other judges hit their buzzers as well!
One of the most impressing things about it was that Brown’s original version already includes plenty of powerful climbs up a scale. Still, Eden’s version meets that challenge and even surpasses it right from the very beginning!
Though she’s only started her performance, all the judges are already getting up out of their chairs.
As the song goes on, the performance just gets better and better.
Although the original version is one of the most iconic soul recordings of all time, her version is so soulful and unique that it shocks the audience and has the judges screaming.
When it’s finally all over, everyone gets on their feet to give her a standing ovation. Back stage, her parents are watching with tears in her eyes—they knew that she sang a song that meant so much to her.
Since the audition was uploaded to YouTube, it’s earned some 40 million views!
Needless to say, performances like Eden’s show why The Voice has had so much success as an international franchise.
No matter what part of the world you’re in, there are so many people who are incredibly talented who just need the opportunity to shine. With that being said, very few people have a voice quite as incredible as Eden’s was!
While this audition was originally uploaded in 2012, it’s clear that Eden’s performance that day is still making waves around the world. With any luck, we’re going to be seeing more and more of her in the music industry going forward.
Congratulations to Karise Eden on her amazing audition! Be sure to watch the full thing in the clip below:
