Performing on a musical reality show is a challenge for a number of reasons.
On the most basic level, you need to have the musical chops to get through the auditions and onto the main stage. Beyond that, you also need to have the stage presence and the confidence not to let your nerves get to you under the bright lights.
Last but not least, there’s a certain unpredictability that a truly memorable performance needs to have—whether that means connecting with the judges or choosing the perfect song.
In some cases, a performer can do all of those things at the same time!
At least, that was definitely the case in one performance on The Voice’s 2019 season.
Like every other audition on the show, it began with all the judges’ backs turned to the contestant and the stage lights down low. After a moment, a jazzy song starts to play—and it’s clear from the very beginning that judge John Legend recognizes it immediately!
That’s because the song being played is “A Good Night,” originally performed by Legend himself. Needless to say, it’s takes some confidence to perform a song that somebody else did right in front of that person.
Regardless, this singer was definitely up to the challenge.
As the song begins, it’s clear that he has a smooth, assured voice.
Though the song choice was a pretty obvious play for Legend’s attention, the first person to hit their buzzer to turn around is judge Adam Levine who is immediately bobbing his head to the heat
Shortly behind him is judge Kelly Clarkson, who is also definitely feeling the vibes. As the song continues, both judge Blake Shelton and Legend are into the performance… but they don’t turn around.
When the song finally ends, the whole crowd gives him a big round of applause.
At the very end, the contestant introduces himself as Kalvin Jarvis from Tucson, Arizona.
Right away, Legend thanks him for his song choice—even if he didn’t turn around! After that, Clarkson compliments him on his great high notes, but particularly for his smooth low notes (just like Legend himself has).
After a moment, the audience finally hears why Legend didn’t turn around. As he says himself, he’s a little bit picky when it comes to performances of his own songs, even if he thought Jarvis did a great job.
Jarvis takes it in stride—after all, there are still two judges fighting over him!
Above all, it looks like Levine wants to snag Jarvis immediately.
As he says himself, Legend was probably the best choice for him as a coach… but Levine is the second best! After all the back and forth, it’s finally time for Jarvis to make a decision. After some deliberation, Jarvis says he’s going to go with Levine as his coach!
In this season of the show, the funniest thing by far has been to see how new judge Legend adjusts to the panel—and how much of a hard time the other coaches give him with every choice! Although Jarvis was clearly trying for Legend’s approval (and all the other coaches were shocked he didn’t get it), Jarvis still ended up on the right team.
Congratulations to Kalvin Jarvis on an inspired performance! Watch the full thing in the clip below:
