As one of today’s most popular talk show hosts, Ellen DeGeneres is known for her amazing sense of humor and a long list of fascinating guests.
On top of the Hollywood stars, the talk show host often invites viral celebrities to appear on her show, often surprising them with amazing gifts and items. Of all the guests she’s featured, however, one remains especially close to her heart.
Meet Kai Langer.
Born in Woodland, Texas, Kai went viral at 4 years old, when his mother captured a video of him singing Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” while wearing a fedora.
The young boy’s expressive facial reactions and complete devotion to the song propelled him into viral stardom— ultimately catching the attention of Ellen DeGeneres who invited him onto her show.
On his first appearance, Kai charmed Ellen, even making her his “first girlfriend”. Later, he serenaded her with another Bruno Mars hit.
Since then, Kai has become an audience favorite, often visiting Ellen and performing songs for the crowd. At one point, Ellen was generous enough to organize a meeting with Bruno Mars, himself. Most recently, however, Kai seems to have a new celebrity idol in the form of Ed Sheeran— and last year, Kai was completely starstruck when Ellen arranged to have Ed Sheeran come out on stage while he was singing a Sheeran song.
In the video, viewed 33 million times, you see the ever-charming Kai presenting Ellen with a homemade Valentine.
The two chat a bit about Kai’s family life, discussing how he wants a little brother— but only if he’s 5 years old. Otherwise, “all you can really do is just rub its head”, he tells her. Soon, Kai says he’ll be singing Sheeran’s hit “Thinking Out Loud”, and from there, the now 8-year-old busts out in his iconic style.
With his hilariously intense expressions and movements, Kai starts singing “Thinking Out Loud”.
Even Ellen has a hard time keeping a straight face, as she watches the boy soulfully twist and punch the air, even turning and pointing to her when he sings “I know you’ll still love me the same.”
While Kai is singing, the audience suddenly bursts into applause. Unbeknownst to the pint-sized performer, Sheeran has just walked onstage.
Sneaking up behind Kai, Sheeran plants himself on the arm of the boy’s chair, watching the passionate performance.
I keep waiting for Kai to notice, but nope! He’s so involved in his routine, his doesn’t have a clue. In fact, Ellen has to tap him on the shoulder to make him turn around.
When Kai sees Sheeran, he’s instantly star-struck.
With his face frozen into a giant grin, he can only muster a shy “hi”. But, as if that wasn’t good enough, Ellen still has another surprise!
Since being uploaded, Kai and Sheeran’s appearance has been viewed 33 million times.
It’s easy to fall in love with Kai’s unadulterated performance— not to mention his adorable response to seeing the superstar.
