The most important part of an audition is the first 60 seconds.
But honestly, if you can’t impress someone in 10 seconds, then you really need to work extra hard during those remaining 50 seconds.
Luckily for Justin Kilgore, he didn’t need to put in any extra effort – he impressed the coaches on The Voice the moment he started singing!
On The Voice, the first round of the competition is the “Blind Audition.”
Contestants will start singing while the four coaches face away from them. In order to get into the competition, at least one judge needs to hit their red button and turn to face the singer.
This is how the coach says “I want you” to the singer to get them to join their team!
Justin picked Chris Young‘s song “Tomorrow” for his audition and it was a good choice for his voice.
He started out the song and absolutely nailed the beginning lyrics:
Tomorrow I’m gonna leave here
I’m gonna let you go and walk away
Like every day I said I would
And tomorrow I’m gonna listen
The coaches were all smiling at each other and after 45 seconds, three coaches hit their buttons at the same time to try and nab Justin!
But poor Blake Shelton got blocked by Alicia Keys! A new addition to season 14 of The Voice is the Block Button – where a coach can block another from adding a singer to their team.
The coaches only get one block per competition, so it is a big deal for a coach to use this!
When you watch the video, you can tell right from the start that Alicia had an interest in Justin.
After Blake yelled at her for blocking him, all while Justin kept singing, the final coach, Adam Levine, spun around. Justin’s mom could be seen freaking out backstage after this!
Kelly Clarkson and Adam jumped out of their seats to mock Blake at the end of the audition just to make fun of him for being blocked.
Alicia admitted that she did in fact block Blake, but then told Justin why:
“I did use my only block for you because I knew your voice was that special. You moved my spirit. I definitely have a vision for you. Congratulations on a beautiful performance!”
Kelly, Adam, and Alicia then fought each other to impress Justin more, name dropping people like Reba McEntire, Meryl Streep, and more to get him onto their team.
Kelly related to Kevin about the fact that she is a former singing competition contestant herself from her American Idol days.
“It’s not just to win this show, it is to win longevity!”
Even though Alicia used her block for Kevin, he wound up picking a different coach to join forces with on this season!
