Everyone has different talents, and for some people, they become highly-skilled before even reaching adulthood. Just wait until you see how incredibly gifted the dancing duo is in the video below.
It’s hard to believe they’re only teenagers!
Kayla Henley and Jeremy Webb were 15 and 17 when they entered the National Shag Dance Championships (NSDC) in the Juniors II Division. All it took was moments before the crowd was going wild over what they saw.
The Carolina Shag came to life on South Carolina’s beaches many decades ago. It became popular among the younger crowd in the 40s, with people dancing the style to beach music.
If you’ve seen the Carolina Shag before, you know it’s a fun partner dance that requires quick-moving feet and a lot of energy! As the Discover South Carolina website points out, it’s been referred to as the “swing dance of the South.”
The style, of course, isn’t just for practicing on the beaches though. Nowadays, it can be seen in national dance competitions – including at the annual NSDC in Myrtle Beach.
Kayla and Jeremy are talented dancers that have amazing chemistry as partners. After the 1955 song “Flip, Flop And Fly” fills the room – they “fly” into action.
Suddenly, the duo’s feet light up the dance floor, combined with leg bends, twists, and spins. The crowd can’t help but cheer watching, as there’s no denying that these two are impressive dancers. Not only that – but the routine pairs just perfectly with Big Joe Turner’s famous tune.
One viewer commented:
“I love this version of their dance. I have watched it hundreds of times. Awesome. Great song!!”
Jeremy’s fabulous dance skills, specifically, have caught a lot of people’s eye.
During the performance, the male teen’s legs seem to morph into spaghetti noodles as he does the Shag. It’s mesmerizing to watch, and his moves have left many viewers blown away too.
Another person wrote:
“It’s amazing that they do the same moves most of the time but your eyes are glued to HIM. He is just liquid joy.”
While some believe Jeremy steals the spotlight during the teenagers’ performance – Stages Video Productions pointed out something interesting in the comments.
They explained:
“…for those not familiar with the state dance of South Carolina, the Shag, traditionally the male is the centerpiece of the dance. The women have come along way over the past 20 years in the competition, but the male role is still the dominant focus.”
The NSDC originated in 1984 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and according to their website – they’re the United States’ “longest continuously running shag dance contest.”
Winners of the competition have been given great opportunities in the past. They’ve had the chance to perform on television shows like CBS This Morning and Good Morning America – and at events such as NBA games, PGA annual banquets, and the Beach Music Awards.
Kayla Henley and Jeremy Webb earned more than just a huge round of applause at the end of their performance. They ended up becoming the NSDC Junior II Champions!
It’s mind-blowing what some people are able to accomplish when they’re young – and these two are definitely going places with their dance talent.
