Each person has a story.
Sadly, most people cannot see past that and are too quick to judge.
Twelve years ago, America’s Got Talent launched its fourth season, and as usual, the show was well-received. In one episode, 35-year-old Kevin Skinner walked into the stage to perform.
He came as he was.
He didn’t wear any fancy clothes or shoes; he just wore his comfortable pants, shoes, a baggy sweater, a hat, and a guitar.
Piers was unimpressed.
When he walked on stage, one of the judges, Piers Morgan, shook his head. David Hasselhoff started asking him questions and asked what song he would sing.
Kevin replied that he chose a song from Garth Brooks.
Sharon Osbourne let out a giggle.
Then she pointed out that it was because of his accent. Kevin didn’t seem bothered by the comments, even when the audience laughed at him and his accent.
The laughs and the comments would probably distract most people, but Kevin didn’t mind. He answered the questions, and he just told everyone who he was.
One of the questions was about what he does for a living; the humble man said he catches chicken.
Again, everyone laughed.
Out of curiosity, Hasselhof asked Skinner how many chickens he catches in one day; the man then replied:
“I’m not real good at math (but) we caught about 60,000 in one night (with) six guys.”
Skinner started strumming and everyone listened.
When he started singing, everyone knew he was a great musician. No one dared to speak. They all listened to the farmer that looked so ‘ordinary’ but proven that his performance was mesmerizing.
Skinner chose Garth Brooks’ “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” and he sang it perfectly.
When he finished his song, everyone cheered for him.
Even Hasselhoff gave a standing ovation.
Morgan, who was shaking his head upon seeing Skinner, gave his opinion. He said:
“There’s a moment in every season, I could remember them all. When somebody comes onstage, dressed like you are, your cap’s on the wrong way around and you know, we’re all like, ‘This is going to be a total car crash.'”
Then he said that when he heard Skinner sing, every changed. Morgan described it as “one of the most emotional, powerful performances (he’d) seen in a long time.”
Everyone agreed.
Osbourne told Skinner that she felt he was a lovely person and genuine.
When it was Hasselhoff’s turn, he told Skinner that he moved all of them with his performance. He also said that Skinner did a great job, and he deserved their decision.
All the judges voted ‘yes’.
Before Morgan said ‘yes’ he said something:
“You’re the real deal. You could win this competition. I’m a yes!”
True enough, after many more performances, Kevin Skinner became the winner of AGT Season 4.
A long road to walk
It was a long road for his humble country singer, but he had hope, and he had talent.
No matter how many judgmental people he had encountered, he did his best and proved to everyone that he could do it.
