Meet Joseph Allen: a college student from Phoenix, Arizona with incredible self-confidence!
When Joseph was 21, he decided to audition for America’s Got Talent. In an interview before his audition, Joseph explained that he was from a big, blended family, and he was the youngest of 12 kids. He said his mom, dad, stepmom, and stepdad all played a big part in his upbringing.
“When I told my dad I was going to be on America’s Got Talent¸ my dad cried. He’s also known that I’ve had this thing of just, like, saying something and accomplishing it,” Joseph said.
It turned out, Joseph had a good reason to be so confident. He explained that he decided one day he wanted to take part in motocross competitions. He trained and quickly started winning races. He also said the same thing happened with singing—he started recording videos and putting them online, and they quickly went viral.
Then, it was time for Joseph to begin his audition. He entered the stage to a series of loud cheers—tons of his friends from college had come to support him. Simon joked that Joseph had received “best reaction for doing nothing he’d ever seen on the show.”
Then, Joseph told the judges he was going to perform an original song. They were skeptical but also excited to see what he could do.
Before he started singing, the judges asked him why he was competing on the show. They were amazed by his answer:
“I see myself as being someone who can make a major impact in the world and I just want to see how much of a footprint I can leave on earth before I leave.”
Joseph began singing, and it quickly became clear that he had a big voice to match his big confidence!
Joseph’s song was about his desire for the world to know his name. It also featured a rap portion about the AGT judges which made them crack up. As Joseph sang, the audience cheered. They cheered particularly loud when Joseph sang the line:
“After today, the world’s gonna know my name.”
When Joseph finished, the audience and the judges all gave him a standing ovation. Then, it was time for the judges’ feedback.
Simon, Julianne, and Gabrielle all gave Joseph positive feedback. Julianne, in particular, got very emotional as she was giving her feedback. She said she loved how upbeat and energic Joseph was.
Howie gave his feedback last.
“From the moment you walked out, your smile was electric,” Howie said. “You walked up with such exuberance, and that’s what life is. Life is a series of moments. People at home are talking about this moment. People in this room are talking about this moment.”
Then, Howie climbed onto the judges’ table. He stomped on the golden buzzer, sending Joseph straight to the live shows in Hollywood.
Joseph cried and laughed as the golden streamers surrounded him. He had done what he set out to do—he had made an impact!
