Before the popularity of electronic music and the use of audio enhancers, some of the greatest known songs of all time used only instruments and raw vocals.
As a result, these old songs have a classic feel that’s hard to replicate, even as they continue to inspire new generations of artists. From the simple texture of an original song, younger artists can make all kinds of new covers and interpretations.
And the performance in this video is a great example!
As these two performers showed, just one or two voices accompanied by a simple instrument such as a guitar is certainly enough to take your heart for a ride. In all, this acoustic cover is a great throwback to the nostalgic times.
There is no need for a complicated arrangement for this wonderful cover.
As the old saying goes, there’s a real beauty in simplicity.
A simple setup is what they needed to prepare for this music cover: a sofa, an acoustic guitar, a recording microphone, and a single camcorder directly angling towards them. The curtains were left open, letting the light pass through the translucent windows. The set was calm, and just by looking at it, it makes viewers feel at home.
Sitting on the sofa are Allison Young and Josh Turner, prepared to perform a cover of “Crazy.”
Though the song was originally written by Willie Nelson, these two decided to play it in the style of Pasty Cline. They kicked it off with a harmonic whistle overture, and it was like listening to birds’ harmonizing in the forest. In an instant, this duo’s acoustic cover made people fall in love with them! You’ll never get tired of listening to Young’s inviting voice. After the intro, Young sings the lyrics on her own while Turner accompanies her on guitar.
She has a powerful voice and a perfect vibrato.
Her vocal runs were as mesmerizing as a siren’s voice, and it’s almost impossible to stop listening to.
Also, she sang each line full of emotions making us see a clear image of this love ballad’s interpretation. All the while, Turner gently plucks his guitar strings to turn this song into a lullaby.
Accompanying Young’s voice is Turner’s perfect finger plucking.
Wrapping his acoustic guitar around him, he plays the tune with ease. His strings produce a gentle sound, but he plucks and transitions each chord in an intricate and interesting way.
With those characteristics, the overall arrangement of the song was like a mixture of jazz and lullaby.
As an instrumentalist, he was able to hammer the soul of music into this particular cover. Throughout the performance, Turner moves his capo to his right to transpose the song’s original pitch by half.
At that moment, Turner joins Young in singing the song.
Young continues to sing the melody part as Turner harmonizes with his blending. With that, they walk the song to its end with a whistling outro. Just when we thought the video was over, they include a clip of recording bloopers where Turner hilariously fails in his attempts to bend with Allison’s whistle.
This sweet serenade found its way into the internet after Turner uploaded the video to his YouTube channel.
Since the clip was posted, it has racked up 1.5 million views and 46,000 likes.
For those who like this performance, Turner has plenty of other winning videos on his channel.
Be sure to check out some of the others, as they’re all just as interesting as this one is!
