Imagine a night so magical that it leaves you covered in goosebumps.
That’s precisely what happened when vocal powerhouses Josh Groban and Kelly Clarkson teamed up for a Broadway duet that can only be described as spellbinding.
This unforgettable moment unfolded during Josh Groban’s Stages Live event, a PBS special that showcased iconic songs from musical theater, including a gem from Phantom of the Opera.
His love for the stage led him to create an album called “Stages,” a compilation of Broadway’s greatest hits.
On his website, he passionately shares, “Theater and musical theater have always been in my heart.
These are songs I’ve wanted to sing since I was in high school.”
Among the tracks on “Stages” is the beautiful “All I Ask of You” from “Phantom of the Opera.”
But Josh knew he couldn’t go it alone.
Enter Kelly Clarkson, the songstress with a voice as versatile as it is powerful, who was more than up for the challenge.
The anticipation was palpable when the Stages Live event was announced.
Fans were buzzing with excitement at the prospect of seeing their favorite Broadway songs come to life, performed by none other than Josh Groban.
During the show, he told the audience, “When we were making this record and I was going to record this song, I knew that this duet had to be recorded in a very, very special way. And, it had to be recorded with a very special singer.”
That “very special singer” was, of course, Kelly Clarkson.
Fun fact: “Phantom of the Opera” was the first musical she ever saw, making this performance even more sentimental for her.
“All I Ask of You” is a poignant duet between the characters Raoul and Christine Daaé.
Kelly confessed to the audience that she had always dreamt of playing Christine.
Thanks to Josh, her dream was finally realized.
As the instrumental intro faded, Josh’s voice filled the room.
He sang, “No more talk of darkness – Forget these wide-eyed fears. I’m here, nothing can harm you. My words will warm and calm you…”
Within moments, it was clear why Josh has captured so many hearts in the crowd and with viewers.
Then it was Kelly’s turn.
Her voice soared, sending shivers down the spines of everyone present.
It was evident that she, too, was a natural fit for musical theater.
The chemistry between the two was electric, reaching a crescendo when their voices merged in a harmonious blend that left the audience breathless.

Reflecting on the experience, Josh told Billboard, “Whenever you can take a classic song that everybody knows and add a nice surprise to it, that’s always the best thing. You give people what they weren’t expecting.”
