We are living in a changing world.
While the pandemic of 2020 has brought with it a fair share of uncertainty and darkness, it has also flooded us with light. If it has proven anything, it has shown us that we are resilient and strong, a theme that has transpired globally. Nation to nation, we have reached out in solidarity, demonstrating community and support.
On April 18, 2020, Global Citizen hosted a digital broadcast concert titled One World: Together At Home.
A variety of powerful artists gathered together, using their voices and gifts to inspire hope in a frantic climate.
Collectively, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Lady Gaga, Lang Lang and John Legend assembled to deliver an unforgettable performance of the 1998 classic “The Prayer.” The song weaved its way across the globe, touching millions of watchers with a message of hope.
“The Prayer” is a powerful song by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
It was originally written for the 1998 film Quest for Camelot.
The two singers debuted a duet on both of their respective studio albums, going on to perform the song live many times. It won a Golden Glove Award for Best Original Song in 1999 and was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2000. Its powerful message remains timeless, and ever-relevant to our constantly changing world.
The version we have for you today is a performance shared between Celine Dion and Josh Groban.
Celine Dion appeared on a CBS TV special in February of 2008 titled That’s Just The Woman In Me.
Among performing some of her top hits, she teamed together with Josh Groban to deliver an utterly uplifting performance of the treasured song.
This moving collaboration is sure to take your breath away.
The video begins with Dion taking center stage, offering a small anecdote before the performance.
She recalls how she was rehearsing this very song for the Grammys years ago with a full orchestra.
However, her duet partner, Andrea Bocelli, was nowhere to be found. It turns out he could not make the rehearsal.
Instead, Dion was introduced to the stand-in for the Grammy rehearsal.
She was told that she would practice the song with (at the time) a 17-year-old Josh Groban.
Skeptical, she saw him then as a kid, cute and nervous and young—attempting to fill in giant shoes. She continues on to say “That kid is here tonight” and the crowd erupts in applause.
The duet that follows is a stunning performance, capable of giving anyone goosebumps.
Dion’s powerful voice rings out into the auditorium, singing the reassuring lyrics:
“I pray you’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer
When we lose our way.”
Following her right on cue, Groban chimes in with the Italian lyrics. And together they deliver an impeccable show.
Since being uploaded to YouTube, this video has received almost 80 million views and 319,000 likes.
While the performance itself is from over a decade ago, its message of guidance and peace remains forever appropriate.
Fans across YouTube agree, one stating:
“Two incomparable artists together making musical magic and uplifting our souls with a Beautiful performance of The Prayer. Grazie, Josh and Celine ❤ You both not only entertain your audience, but engage us and enhance our lives with your God-given gifts. The humility which you each evince makes you even more endearing. Bless you both.”
