There are a million and one reasons why someone would audition for one of the many talent shows. Sure, they all want to prove that they have what it takes to win, but every contestant has a different motivation or support system that nudges them to take the extra step to really put themselves out there.
For some it’s a parent, for some it’s their own self-esteem, and for some, it’s a child.
Joseph Whelan is a 26-year-old tool salesman who’s been playing in bands for years. He’s also a father to an adorable four-year-old boy.
Joseph loves his son and wants to do the best for him, be the best role model he can be, and make sure that he grows up to be a happy and well-rounded young man. However, since he and his son’s mother broke up, Joseph no longer lives with him. It absolutely breaks his heart.
His audition on X Factor is his chance to show his son that he can grow up to be whatever he chooses to be, as long as he works hard for it!
When he walked onto the stage he was a bit timid, despite his muscular build and tattoos. The ladies in the audience just wouldn’t give it a rest when it came to cheering him on.
He absolutely ate it up!
When he starts to sing, the judges were not at all expecting the sound that comes out of his mouth. It’s such a rock and roll, raspy, powerful voice! Compared to his sweet and slightly bashful demeanor before, this was quite the shock!
There’s not a soul in the place that didn’t absolutely love this performance. However, I think the biggest fan was backstage the whole time.
When the camera pans to Joseph’s son dancing along to the song like the happiest kid in the world, it just melts your heart.
But prepare yourself, because the most adorable moment is after the song is over and his son comes running out on stage to tell his dad what a good job he did! Joseph scoops him up into his arms and the big burly man even starts to shed some tears.
Although Joseph didn’t win, he returned to X-Factor a year later and auditioned again, this time with a stunning performance of a Bon Jovi classic.
He’s out here trying to make his family’s life better. Later on this season, Joseph breaks down in tears when he the judges deliver a verdict on his performance of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. We could listen to this hunky dad’s voice all day long!
