Beyond just the simple act of performing, auditioning on shows like American Idol is often a way to share yourself with the world.
Though it goes without saying, the vast majority of the people who compete on musical competition shows will either be forgotten about or will fail to truly fulfill their creative ambitions.
Still, the ones who make it are completely unafraid to share their full selves and to express their vision with the world. More generally, appearing on shows like American Idol is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to show the whole world what you have to say.
And that’s exactly what one contestant did.
As the clip begins, a man wearing a bright, flamboyant outfit walks into the audition room.
Although the judges try to react warmly and neutrally, it’s tough for them to stifle their laughter at first. Though the rest of the band is dressed in a pretty standard fashion, the main singer seems dressed like a bizarre rock star… and nobody is sure what to expect.
After a few moments, they ask him what he and his band’s name are. He replies that his name is Jorgie and his band is called Jorgie and the Orgies.
At that point, the judges can’t help but laugh in disbelief.
After that, Jorgie tells Katy Perry that he can do a great impression of her.
Perry says she would like to see it, and without missing a beat, Jorgie sets into a comical version of “California Girls” that makes Perry’s jaw drop.
Although it’s not bad, the entire thing is a little bizarre… and nobody in the room is quite sure what to think. It’s also not very flattering, so things are not off to a great start. Next, Perry asks him to tell his story a little bit.
He tells everyone that Jorgie was inspired by Perry and that she gave him the confidence to try out.
When asked what he’s going to perform, he replies that he’s doing an original song called “Heaven.”
To begin the song, the band starts playing on violin and piano as accompaniment. As it turns out, Jorgie’s voice is powerful and heartfelt when he’s performing his own song—and the judges can’t believe their ears! As he gets to the chorus, his voice soars higher and higher, hitting some very difficult notes. although a lot of performers try to do something safe in the audition, it’s clear that Jorgie risked it all.
When it’s all over, nobody is sure what to say.
The main criticism is that Jorgie has been hiding behind some gimmicks… but that his talent is undeniable.
Although the name doesn’t sound serious, the ultimate take away is that the judges are “in awe,” as Lionel Richie put it! After a few more comments, all three judges give him and his band a yes to advance to Hollywood!
Although there have been all kinds of unique performances on American Idol, Jorgie’s audition showed everyone once again that you can never judge a book by its cover. On the other hand, it also showed us all the importance of taking yourself a little more seriously.
