In some situations, you don’t need to understand the words being spoken to you to know that you like it.
Music can completely transcend language, as it isn’t always about the words, but the feeling behind it.
Johnny Bliss’s “Blind Audition” on The Voice just goes to prove that!
The singer went into his audition with the intent to not sing in English. Typically, people do not sing in languages other than English on the U.S. version of this show.
But Johnny chose the song “Preciosa” by Marc Anthony and it was the right choice!
Only 9 seconds into his audition, Adam Levine hit his button to turn around. He was mesmerized by Johnny’s voice!
Coaches Kelly Clarkson and Alicia Keys were quick to follow suit, but sadly for Kelly, she was blocked!
A new addition to this season of The Voice is that each coach has the chance to block another coach from adding a singer to their team. They only get one block per season and Adam used his to block Kelly!
Johnny finished out “Preciosa” strong, as his mother cheered from backstage and the coaches applauded him. All of the coaches had turned their chairs and were on their feet by the end of his audition!
Adam Levine got up to tell Johnny exactly why he blocked Kelly and what he thought of Johnny.
“The second I heard you sing, I thought ‘okay, who is going to stand in my way of this.’ If I could block everybody, I would have.
I think you have, not only the voice that can go all the way here but what I also believe is that there are those really rare moments where I can lose myself in something and feel something so incredible and overwhelming, and I had one with you.”
Adam also reminded Johnny that he only got one block and he used it for him!
Kelly could not get over the fact that she wasn’t able to persuade Johnny to join her team, as she truly felt his singing was the music missing from mainstream radio.
While Adam had pleaded his case, it was then Blake and Alicia’s turns to try and win him over. Alicia said:
“You were obviously put on this planet to do what you just did. I would love to get to know you better and to continue to bring out that greatness that is inside. And to show the world what New York looks like!”
Blake attempted to relate to Johnny on a country level, but Johnny was too excited to explain that he’d been singing about Puerto Rico!
Which led Alicia into the conversation once again, mentioning that she was named after her Puerto Rican godmother and then she even got up to sing to Johnny in Spanish.
Johnny’s decision was a truly tough one after that!
