59-year-old John Wines looks like your favorite neighbor who always has a smile when he sees you and goes out of his way to help others.
He probably does but underneath that charming demeanor is a rockstar that could have been had he chosen to.
Certain circles know the man under his Old Grey Guitarist moniker.
He has built a massive following on Instagram and, in particular, TikTok, with an unbelievable 1.3 million followers
But it is only now, on America’s Got talent, that Wines has introduced himself to the world.
The pre-audition chat reveals a gentleman who cares about teaching kids while sharing his passion for music.
No one even knows what he’s going to do, thanks to that unassuming vibe of his.
And what does the teacher do on stage?I’m speechless, he’s incredible. 🤩
A little bit of Brian May and Eddie Van Halen using his Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 HH FR M electric guitar.
The unassuming-looking teacher starts things off with some impassioned whammy bar antics, before joining a familiar stomping beat with an up-tempo take on Queen’s immortal stadium-pleaser, We Will Rock You.
Everyone, even the judges, were stomping and clapping along, with Heidi Klum singing Freddie Mercury’s part.
Wine then highlights his playing with some very tasty, Eddie Van Halen-inspired tapping.
Guitar fans know that May and Van Halen are some of THE biggest names in the guitar world, so Wine’s playing is a testament to his impressive skills.
Oh, and he was once an electrician, before becoming a teacher.
Wine is definitely electrifying!
In fact, he cuts his playing short which is a shame because we could all use some more Wine.
The audience began chanting for more, and even host Terry Crews wanted to hear more licks from that guitar.
Wine, visibly moved, was holding back tears from all the admiration and adoration he was receiving.
Simon Cowell said he, “was not expecting that.”
“You look so normal and nice and sweet,” Cowell said. “And then you turn into somebody else when you perform. I love that.”
Sofia Vergara commented, “You didn’t think you could be a teacher. Did you ever think you could be a rockstar?”
Howie Mandel called the guitar act “so surprising” and “so unexpected.”
“It’s the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done,” Wines said. “But also, the most exhilarating. My legs are going.”
The former electrician turned teacher got all four judges to say yes, and that’s not even remotely surprising.
Who knew that an axe and Wine would go so well together?
And someone from the comments section knew him,
“He used to be my guitar teacher in school!! I’m so happy to see him on AGT, he deserves the world!! I will be forever grateful for everything he’s taught me.” posted @jinxah2366
This is a man who embodied the whole “never judge a book by its cover”, mainly because he deserves to have a spread on a rock magazine.
And we will definitely be seeing and hearing more of this guitar shredding gentleman.
Talk about aging like fine wine.
