When it comes to American Idol, sometimes, people have to pull out all the stops in order to get noticed.
Thousands of people audition for American Idol each season and the judges don’t always have the time or energy to catch every little thing. This is why people often do something wacky on unusual in their audition.
In order to appear on TV, people really want to show off their skills to get noticed.
For Johanna Jones, she decided to start her audition by revealing her unusual singing trick. It all has to do with chips!
Johanna chatted with the judges and bonded with Katy Perry over their love of In-N-Out Burger. But it turns out they had more in common!
When Luke Bryan asked Johanna what she did to prepare before she sang, she told him she had an unusual trick. She likes to eat a bag of potato chips right before she sings!
This prompted Katy to ask if Johanna was her spirit animal because she had an empty bag of chips underneath the judges’ table.
Johanna said that she eats the chips to help with inflammation. According to Katy, this was the oldest trick in the book. She used to do it as well back in the day!
To help Johanna get ready for her audition, Katy offered her a bag of chips, then challenged Johanna and Luke to race each other to see who finished their chips first. But instead of letting them win, she jumped into the competition to eat a bag of chips herself.
After they were done, Johanna brought in Alan to play guitar for her while she sang. For her audition, Johanna Jones chose to sing “I’m Not the Only One” from Sam Smith’s 2014 album, In the Lonely Hour. It was a great choice to show off her unique singing technique!
After she was done singing, judge Lionel Richie told Johanna:
“We in the business, we call this the package. Your control, your ability to sell it to us. I’m telling you, it was mesmerizing. You’ve got the touch, you’ve got the touch!”
His kind words brought Johanna to tears. Luke agreed, saying that Johanna had a big opportunity by appearing on American Idol. All three judges instantly voted for her to go to Hollywood.
Since being shared on American Idol’s YouTube channel, the audition video has gotten over 2.1 million views, 25,000 likes, and has over 1,300 comments. One YouTube user wrote:
Wow. The eyes, the personality, the voice! What a total package! Good luck girl!
