No matter what kind of music you listen to, most people agree that Christina Aguilera is one of the best living vocalists.
Aguilera was born in Staten Island in New York City and released her debut album in 1999. When she first arrived on the scene, she was known as a teen pop-star with huge hits including “Genie in a Bottle,” What a Girl Wants,” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).”
Though each of these fared well on the charts, she went on to develop a more adult, mature voice with her own artistic control over her music.
Today, she’s become a mainstay of pop and music in general.
Beyond her solo music career, however, she’s also been a voice coach on The Voice from 2011 to 2016.
In that time, she’s offered all kinds of guidance and vocal tips to plenty of contestants. Still, one of the more memorable moments took place on the show’s 2016 season with a contestant named Joe Maye.
Maye had chosen to sing “I Put A Spell On You,” a classic originally by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (though it has since been covered by countless other artists). As she speaks to Maye, Aguilera says that she loves that song and that she’d actually love to sing it with him one day.
Before long, the other judges have seized on the idea, asking her “Why don’t you?”
After just a little bit of encouragement from her colleagues (and the audience) Aguilera gets out of her chair to perform.
Although it’s clear that the segment wasn’t planned, somebody from the crowd runs a microphone over to her. Everyone is cheering as loud as they can as she approaches the stage.
It all begins when Maye sings the iconic first lines of the song directly to Aguilera. Without missing a beat, she sings her own stunning response to the main vocal line. The song continues with both singers trying to outdo one another.
Needless to say, the audience and the judges can’t get enough of it!
Although Maye’s performance is impressive, Aguilera shows everybody in the crowd exactly why people call her the best in the world.
Before long, the two of them show the crowd so much chemistry and electricity. When it’s finally over, all the judges are on their feet giving her a huge round of applause. For his part, Maye puts his hand over his face and runs around the stage screaming—after all, he can’t believe that he just got to perform a song with his musical idol!
Although nobody planned for them to duet, it all went off without a hitch.
While there have been all kinds of memorable moments on the show over the years, this impromptu duet stands as one of the best.
Although the judges on The Voice are mostly there to guide the talent and to compete amongst themselves, it’s worth remembering that all of them are vocal professionals in their own right. By getting onstage to duet with Maye, Aguilera proved once again why she’s loved the world over.
