If you’re a fan of country music, you probably know who Jewel is.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Jewel is a singer-songwriter who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
Over her long career, she’s won four Grammy Awards and may be most easily recognizable for her smash hit single “Who Will Save Your Soul.” Over the years she’s won over the hearts of many fans for her poetic lyrics and her beautiful voice.
But as it turns out, she also has a sneaky sense of humor about herself.
That’s because in 2010, Jewel partnered up with Funny or Die to make a prank video.
As the clip begins, she explains that the company reached out to her with an idea. They wanted her to dress up in disguise and go to a karaoke bar singing her own songs.
Overall, the goal was to see if anybody would figure out that it was actually her. Unlike many other pranks of this kind, the core of the video would be that the people would never actually find out that it was Jewel!
Needless to say, she agreed—and they got ready to put her in makeup.
To fully disguise her, the makeup artists gave her a bigger nose, glasses, a wig and a new identity.
She would be going to the karaoke bar as Karen, a nondescript business woman who was just out to have a good time with her friends.
To make it even more convincing, they even had an entourage of other “business people” with her to make it look like it was a work event! After that, the whole group headed over to The Gas Lite in Santa Monica, California.
Shortly after that, it was showtime!
To set the scene, all of her coworkers went up to sing karaoke first to complete the ruse.
After each one performs, they call into the crowd. “Karen, you’ve gotta get up here!” or “Karen, come dance with us!
As part of her character, Jewel plays the shy woman who doesn’t really want to do karaoke… and all that does is fire the crowd up even more! After all her friends egg her on, she finally goes up there and the crowd goes wild!
Although everyone wants her to succeed, nobody expects her to be so good!
After “Karen” gets up there, she sets into her iconic song “Who Will Save Your Soul”… and everybody is blown away!
“She sounds exactly like Jewel!” somebody says. After that, the crowd asks if she should sing another Jewel song—and the crowd goes wild. Another person says it was the first time anyone has ever gotten an encore!
Though the crowd starts asking about her, her “coworkers” say that she only sings at Christmas parties. Although they keep the ruse going for as long as they can, at the end they finally reveal that it actually is Jewel!
Though it goes without saying, the crowd can’t believe their eyes!
Of all the many surprise performances there are on the internet, this one is incredible!
There’s something so sweet about how the entire crowd supports her both in costume and out of costume. As Jewel even says in the video, the entire experience clearly meant so much to her.
