Though there are plenty of reality singing competitions on television today, The Voice is one of the most consistently surprising.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with the show, each audition begins with the judges’ backs turned to the contestant.
As the person sings, each judge has the opportunity to hit a button to turn around and see who’s performing—and everyone interested has to hit their button before the song ends. Once everyone can see the contestant, it’s time for them to convince that person to be on their team!
Though it goes without saying, this element of surprise is one of the best parts of the show.
It was that same element of surprise that made this audition so great.
As the performance started, a high-pitched voice started to sing “This Woman’s Work.” For anyone who isn’t familiar, the song is originally by Kate Bush and was released in 1989 (though it has since been covered by Maxwell as well in 2009).
Right from the beginning, the voice is so high and soulful. While the song is originally by a woman, the voice they hear is clearly a man.
Although the beginning is strong, the performance takes a few more turns that shock the judges.
For his part, judge Adam Levine has all kinds of shocked expressions on his face.
Though the singer starts very high, he soon drops into a very low register which surprises everyone! As the performance goes on, his voice soars all over the track and he never loses his soulful edge.
Though the song is definitely an interesting choice, nobody seems to be turning around. Still, as he makes a final push at the end of the song, he finally convinces judge Jennifer Hudson to hit her button and turn.
And when she does, she can’t believe what she sees!
As everyone else turns around as well, they all share in Hudson’s shock.
While the performance was eclectic, powerful and vocally all over the place, the person standing before their eyes does not at all fit the voice! After a few moments, he introduces himself as Lucas Holliday from Lansing, Michigan.
After a few moments, Levine says what everybody is thinking. “No offense to you because you’re brilliant,” he says,” but you’re like the whitest dude.” Everyone in the audience laughs along with him.
Although everyone laughs, it’s pretty clear that Holliday has won all the judges and the audience over.
But the show isn’t quite over yet!
Hudson was so impressed by Holliday’s voice that she says that they have to sing together, right now! Without missing a beat, Holliday starts in on another soulful song and Hudson picks it up right behind him. They both start vocalizing and competing to see how high and how hard they can push their voices into the song. Before long, Hudson is out of her chair and up on stage with him!
Perhaps most shocking is that he can even keep up with Hudson!
Needless to say, everyone was impressed!
It’s not everyday that you see a man who looks like that singing Gospel music as well as Jennifer Hudson! Regardless, it’s stories like these and moments like this one that keep making the show so special over the years.
