There are thousands of ways on how to connect with other people.
To most people, getting to know each other’s likes and dislikes is the most efficient and easiest way to connect with other people. However, there are still some people who are more comfortable communicating with others via games and music. In some cases, it’s easier to get a message across when there are fewer words to say.
As it turns out, this jazz musician shared some similar sentiments about connecting through a collective love of arcade games.
Kamasi Washington, a jazz saxophonist from California, released a brand new tune that is about his love in an arcade fighting game Street Fighter.
The record was released in 2018 and was part of his dual album “Heaven and Earth.”
Washington shared his sentiments about the record “Street Fighter Mas” with the Pitchfork saying:
“In a lot of ways, for me, video games were the way I connected with them because I was never affiliated with any gangs, but I knew them and I was cool with them and that was mainly through the video games.”
The video showed him preparing for an epic battle!
The music video was directed by A.G. Rojas, and the theme was specifically about Washington’s love for Street Fighter that he developed during childhood.
In the first scene, you could see someone dropping a penny on a coin slot for the famous arcade game. Shortly after that, Washington looks like he’s ready for something big, and he proceeds to ride to the venue with Kevin Gilliam, producer for artists such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, who is known in the short film as BattleCat.
As they reach the venue, he opens the door and finds a space.
He then enters the room with a calm and powerful attitude followed with his sophisticated saxophone tune. He roams around the room and finds a place to sit as if he were waiting for something.
He is part of a Street Fighter tournament, and his turn to battle is drawing near!
Washington’s cool and jazzy music was just like a boss battle music, and he was the challenger.
The music hyped up as he was enjoying his “last meal,” readying him to be taken into battle with real-life Street Fighter champion, Combofiend.
Washington was taken into the room where his enemy was in, and a few games after Washington conquered the champion with his Street Fighter character, Blanka.
Since the clip was posted online, it has earned more than five million views on YouTube. Everyone on the comments was saying that this should be a theme song for a Tarantino movie! Still, Washington already had a thought in mind of how he would use the music.
He claimed to be good at the game, and he jokingly said that he would use it as his theme song as he enters the arena like a boxer.
Furthermore, Washington explained the main concept of his album Heaven and Earth.
He said:
“The meaning within the scope of the record is a connection to the past and all of the many ways we can connect.”
Needless to say, Kamasi Washington is a creative artist to watch out!
