Music group does jazzy reinvention of “I Will Survive,” stuns internet with funky sound

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor is one of those songs that gives you chills every time.

Since its release in 1978, the powerful song has been a go-to for people in the middle of a breakup. Over 40-years after its release, there are still incredible musicians covering the inspirational song.

This brilliant singer teams up with a spunky funk band to do an amazing cover that left the internet in awe.

The group was Scary Pockets, along with musician Mario Jose.

Scary Pockets is made up of Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte, along with a rotating roster of talented musicians from the Los Angeles area. They release weekly videos, like this video of them performing “I Will Survive” with powerhouse vocalist Mario Jose.

When Jose comes in, he begins showcasing his silky smooth voice.

Jose is an extremely gifted singer who studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was part of an award-winning acapella group called Pitch Slapped.

Jose’s sweet and smooth vocals are perfect for this song.

He has just the right amount of power and knows exactly when to use it.

He picks it up a notch when it comes time for the chorus.

When it comes time for the well-known chorus, Jose shows us what his voice can really do and it’s phenomenal.

Scary Pockets also does a terrific job in keeping it funky—they make it their own all while honoring the legendary song that it is.

His vocals are ridiculously controlled.

When it comes time to hit those high notes, Jose has no problem. He goes through the song with ease, making it look effortless as he nails every sound flawlessly. About 1:40 into the video, the keyboard player from Scary Pockets goes off with some crazy electronic sounds.

Toward the end of the performance, they take “I Will Survive” too another level.

Just before the end of the song, Jose unleashes his inner Gloria Gaynor and Tina Turner, roaring out the lyrics that so many people have sung to get them through tough times.

Scary Pockets doesn’t skip a beat the entire performance, staying on cue with Jose while maintaining that funky vibe.

The groovy band has built quite the following on social media. tTeir YouTube channel alone has 577,000 subscribers. For the grand finale, Jose lets his voice go through the roof.

At the very end of the mesmerizing performance, Jose screams the words out as loud as he can while still keeping some control. Not many people can cover these vocals like this, but Jose absolutely kills it!
