Though it goes without saying, it takes a lot to stand out on nationwide reality competition shows.
Ever since the advent of American Idol, the cable landscape is full of shows promising talented individuals a way to achieve their dreams.
Still, as there are more and more of these shows out there all over the world, the competition on each one gets stiffer and stiffer. Still, every so often, someone comes along who has such a unique voice and picks such a perfect song that they can’t help but to melt the audience.
That was definitely the case for this audition from 2011.
The performance took place on the UK’s version of The X Factor.
As the clip begins, the contestant introduces herself as Janet Devlin, a 16-year-old from a remote village called Gortin in Northern Ireland.
As she explains before she goes into the arena, she’s very nervous to get onstage to perform. Although she has always loved to sing, she’s not entirely self-confident… and as a result, she has never gotten onstage in front of a huge audience.
Still, that was all about to change!
Since she’s been writing songs and poetry since she was seven years old, it was high time for her to share her talents with the world.
Once she gets onstage, she tells everyone just how nervous she is. After a moment, she introduces herself. Finally, she tells everyone she’ll be singing “Your Song” by Elton John.
With that, the judges clear the way for her to perform. After taking a breath, the backing music starts playing and Devlin starts to sing.
Although she starts off slow and gentle, soon enough all the judges can’t believe what they’re hearing.
Initially, she’s so nervous that her voice wavers a little bit on the early notes.
After that, though, her voice gets more and more confident and her own unique style starts to shine through.
Even though she’s very shy, there’s something so endearing about how she puts a gentle twist on a song that so many people already recognize! By the end of the song, her voice is soaring and the crowd is completely on her side.
When it’s all over, the whole crowd gets on her feet and gives her a huge round of applause!
After her performance, it’s time for the judges to give her some feedback.
Although she was definitely shy when she came on stage, all the judges say that they couldn’t resist her personality! Devlin practically can’t believe her eyes seeing how beautiful the crowd’s reaction was to her singing.
For her part, judge Kelly Rowland said that she was “completely in a trance” because of her voice. When it’s all over, it’s time for the judges to vote.
Though it might go without saying, she gets all four yeses!
As this performance shows, sometimes the hardest part of these performances is just putting yourself out there!
Even though she’s from a tiny remote village and had lots of stage fright, Devlin still has so much charm and talent.
Fortunately, she got up the courage she needed to put herself out there—and it paid off in a huge way! We’re definitely going to see big things from her in the future.
