Few of the late night shows on television are as musically oriented as Jimmy Fallon’s is.
Generally speaking, people watch late night talk shows before they go to bed as a way to unwind, to catch up on whatever gossip is happening at the moment and to see their favorite stars in conversation.
Still, some shows add a little bit of their own flair to the equation by making their guests do a little bit more, often by having them step out of their comfort zones.
If this sounds like a show you would watch, you’re probably already a fan of The Tonight Show.
As many people probably know, Fallon was on Saturday Night Live before he was on The Tonight Show.
While he was on SNL, a big part of his gimmick and his character was that he would perform musical impressions. Though many performers on SNL are asked to do impressions as part of their audition, not all of them could add this musical element into it as well.
As it turns out, Fallon had no intention of leaving that skill set behind when he went on The Tonight Show—instead, he had many of his guests participate in it with him!
And that extended to actor and comedian Jamie Foxx.
Though many people know Foxx as a hilarious performer and a great actor, he also has a singing career as well.
Anybody who has seen Ray should know that Foxx has all kinds of musical talent. Still, he also has his own singles and features on songs and five studio albums under his belt. For anyone who didn’t know that, his performance on The Tonight Show proved it to everybody.
As the segment starts, Fallon spins a musical roulette wheel to determine what song a person will be singing and in what style.
Up first is “I Can’t Feel My Face” in the style of a 50’s crooner, which Fallon has to do himself.
Because he’s such an old pro at these kinds of routines, he does it with no problem.
Next up is Foxx, who has to perform “Who Let the Dogs Out?” in the style of a Broadway musical. Needless to say, his initial reaction is confusion—he has no idea how he’s going to perform it.
After the music starts, Foxx suddenly gets inspired. He gives the song a spoken word introduction. After that, he sets into a perfectly emotional Broadway version of the song!
At the end of it, he even introduces a plot twist of his own—and the crowd goes wild.
Still, the performance isn’t over yet.
For the last one, Foxx is asked to perform a Rihanna song in the style of an opera singer. Although it seems like an impossible task, Foxx rises to the challenge and does a perfect impression of an opera singer! Eventually, he gets out of his chair and shows off his full singing chops—as he does an incredible vibrato and his voice soars! Although it’s supposed to be a comedy performance, it’s clear that Foxx is actually an incredible singer and performer… and the crowd definitely agrees.
Congratulations to Jamie Foxx on his amazing performance! Watch the full thing in the clip below:
