When it comes to playing music, the possibilities are almost endless.

If you travel around the world, chances are you’re bound to see all kinds of different cultures and genres of music. Though we’re used to hearing popular music and rock on the radio, many of those genres go back to the blues, which go back to even older kinds of music.

Even so, one of the most uniquely American genres of music has to be jazz. Although we think of it as an old genre that has seen its heyday, there are still plenty of people keeping the genre alive.

As just one example, consider the young and talented Jacob Collier.

For those who don’t know, Collier is something of a musical prodigy.

Born in 1994 in London, England, Collier is a multi-instrumentalist and jazz artist who combines all kinds of different genres and time signatures in his music.

Though he makes his own music and uploads it to YouTube, he also does collaborations with other groups just as well. As it turns out, Collier has even done collaborations with up-and-coming pop and R&B artists.

As just one example of that, consider this live performance with Daniel Caesar.

Like Collier, Caesar is a singer-songwriter who is beginning to make a name for himself in the world of music as well.

Caesar is also relatively young, having been born in 1995, and is also independent. He has released several EPs and one full-length album, though his fanbase has grown organically online.

In this performance, the two talents came together for a jaw-dropping show. As the clip begins, Collier stands up in front of the crowd and gets them cheering. A moment later, he sits down at the piano bench and begins to play.

Right away, his deft touch on the keys is impressive and stirs the crowd.

After playing a few licks, he stands up and takes another bow as a joke.

After that, he really gets to work—what comes next is a mind-melting piano solo that leads into a longer melody. In the beginning, he’s only playing notes and chords to keep the audience on the tips of their toes.

But before long, he starts singing as well—although the crowd seems there for Collier, everyone loses their minds when he brings out a special guest.

At that stage, Caesar walks out as well and nobody can believe it.

Finally, Collier stops playing and lets Caesar add his own beautiful voice to the mix.

Even so, Collier accents the singing with some truly insane piano chord transitions. By this stage in the performance, the whole crowd is in the palm of their hands.

As it turns out, the whole performance was building up to a live performance of “Best Part,” a popular song that Caesar has recently released. Although the recorded version is great, the musical chemistry that Collier and Caesar have together is pretty impressive.

Before the song is over, they stop playing and turn it to the audience.

After a singalong, Collier has essentially turned the whole crowd into a professional choir!

With the crowd still singing, Collier goes back to the piano and picks the melody up again… and the emotion is incredible.

When it’s all over, the crowd gives them a huge round of applause. Even if you’re new to these artists, clips like this show that musical creativity truly has no end!
