You would think that country music is primarily made by artists in Nashville or Texas, but that certainly isn’t the case. It’s a beautiful genre that can be, and is, made everywhere. Even in places like Ireland!
A lot of people associate the guitar-driven genre with stereotypical things like pickup trucks and barbeques, but that is so not the case.
Singer-songwriter Marian Curry perfectly proved this just a few years ago with her catchy tune, “I Cry Every Time I Leave Ireland.”
A country song about Ireland?! Yes, you better believe it! And it is super fun, too.
As the song title suggests, Curry grapples with her love for Ireland and the sad emotions she feels when the time comes to go back to America. It’s not that she doesn’t love America — she just really loves Ireland.
“I cry every time I leave Ireland, it hurts me to bid you adieu / From Dublin to Galway and Carlow, it’s a real love affair I’ll tell you,” Curry sings at the beginning of the song.
We also see the singer playing the acoustic guitar everywhere she goes, which is sticking pretty straight to the country genre, but then she also incorporates some traditional Irish instrumentation to spice things up.
Curry creates a beautiful marriage of sounds as she takes from all of her influences!
“When the plane rises out over Shannon and Limerick lays down there below / There’s a part of my heart still in Ireland, many miles from the ocean,” she continues to sing.
Lucky for us, the song also comes with a video where we get to see some beautiful shots of the one and only Ireland as well. Curry makes sure to get several takes in all different locations, all of which are super beautiful.
We see her sitting on some rocks by the water, walking on a hiking trail in a park, lounging in a red gazebo, and exploring the town. And of course, in all of these shots, she is either holding or playing her acoustic guitar which is a very nice touch.
It really is a beautiful ode to Ireland!
Both the song and the video are so charming. Curry’s love for the Irish spot is so genuine, we actually do feel for her when she says she has to leave. I mean, the fact that she even took the time to write this song says a lot!
You know someone really loves something when they decide to write an entire song about it.
Curry’s performance is so sweet and pure too. She looks so happy and content as she smiles, sings, and plays her guitar — like she’s so happy nothing could ruin her day. As long as she’s in… You guessed it! Ireland!
“Let the luck of the Irish be with me as America, I head home to you,” she sings as she ends the song.
She ends the song on a positive note, basically saying that as much as she may love Ireland, America is her home. And she can still take the “luck of the Irish” with her along the way!
What a sweet little song we can all take with us next time we board a plane to Ireland.
