Maybe one of the most memorable “Galway girls,” or girls from Ireland, that comes to mind is Lucy Lawless, star of Xena: The Warrior Princess.
As many may know, Lawless has black hair and piercing blue eyes, the exact same combination described in Steve Earl’s biggest hit “Galway Girl.” Almost two decades later, that song inspired Ed Sheeran to write another hit with the same name.
To get to the point, in Ed Sheeran’s 2017 “Galway Girl” official video appeared eight incredible Irish dancers—but there’s a story behind their awesome collaboration.
The #Step4sheeran campaign was the beginning of a real turmoil in the Irish Dance World.
After the big success of his debut album + in 2012, Ed Sheeran took a break. It didn’t take long, though. The famous English musician, who sold more than 150 million records worldwide, decided to involve his fans in creating his 2017 album. Sheeran started a campaign, announcing that he was looking for Irish dancers to appear in his newest music video.
And, it’s not just any video—it’s the one for “Galway Girl.”
Some of the best dancers worldwide participated in the project, looking forward to working with one of the biggest names in the music industry.
Fusion Fighters were one of many dance groups that hoped to be noticed.
There are eight young girls featured in the video.
It’s later revealed that they all attend Hession school in Galway, and they are members of the progressive performance dance community called The Fusion Fighters. You can find out a lot more about them on their official site.
These lovely ladies didn’t imagine that they were just about to receive their 15 minutes of fame!
Not only did the second most-streamed artist of the decade notice them, but he even decided to include them in his music video.
These girls make the Irish dance look so effortless!
What you’re about to see is a phenomenal dance performance by eight beautiful, blonde ladies. At the beginning of the video, they greet everyone and say that they are huge fans of Sheeran’s.
Then the “Shape of You” goes on, and their feet proceed on creating some fancy magic.
There’s a beautiful landscape behind them, and the fact that they’re all wear matching outfits adds to their impressive synchronization. Then the song switches to “A Lovely Madness” by Beoga, and that’s when the really fast tempo begins.
They make it look so simple!
In the end, girls did the same routine in Ed’s “Galway Girl” video.
What a happy ending! As it turns out, this is actually more like the beginning of an interesting dance career for these eight incredible young women.
Ireland is known for its dancing and cheerful people who are always in for a good laugh.
Dancing is an important part of Irish culture, as is the Irish language and Gaelic football. We’re glad to see that young people are passionate about keeping their cultural heritage alive.
The video was viewed by 16 million people on YouTube, and it’s easy to understand why it became such a sensation.
Ed Sheeran took a wonderful initiative when he decided, once again, to boost the popularity of the Irish dance.
Riverdance did a great job in the past, but Sheeran took it to a global level. Great move, Ed—we’re proud of you!
