Who doesn’t like Toto’s 1982 timeless classic that goes by the name of one of seven world’s continents?
That’s right, we’re talking about “Africa.” Its popularity goes way beyond memes, and the 2018 Weezer cover only contributed to its afterlife. As much as the lyrics “bless the rains down in Africa,” a thunderstorm can be quite scary.
Even so, this video combines the two perfectly.
This choir recreates a perfect thunderstorm before performing their epic “Africa” cover.
For those who don’t know, Angel City Chorale is an independent, non-profit arts organization.
The choir works out of Los Angeles, California.
The aim is to bring people together with one song at a time. The artistic director, Sue Fink, began with the project in 1993 when she brought together a small group of 18 singers. It all grew to a number ten times bigger today.
While we’re at the figures, let’s just say that 10,500 people follow their work on Instagram, and the Angel City Chorale YouTube page counts 83,800 subscribers.
Fink studied conducting with Roger Wagner, and the choir toured internationally.
Sue’s most recent success was conducting four performances on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, where they even received the Golden Buzzer. For more information visit the choir’s official website. Because the organization wouldn’t exist without donors and sponsors, feel free to make a little contribution, too!
The first person you’ll see is the conductor rubbing the palms of her hands, and guess what: it sounds like it’s about to rain.
Soon the whole choir joins in, and they perfectly create a thunderstorm atmosphere. You know you must be good when your performance sounds like the work of nature. They all continue to snap their fingers, making you believe you’re hearing raindrops falling everywhere.
If you close your eyes for a moment and listen to them, the ambient will be as if you were standing on a porch, and the rain is pouring outside.
Prepare for the biggest surprise: the way they create thunder! Everyone in that choir jumps and they’re perfectly synced—and when those feet hit the floor, it’s as if the thunder hit nearby.
The choir is very creative, and they should all get an award for being able to do all that with such perfect timing.
Their voices are a true rainbow after a storm.
Just like it happens in life, there comes the sun after every storm.
The shining moment of this video is when the choir starts to sing. So many angelic voices performing a perfectly well-crafted piece of music, with driving drum loops, some unbelievable harmonies and the recognizable chorus. We were amazed by the reinvention and remarkable effect of the rain that revived a song everyone’s crazy about.
The thing you’ll find obvious is the mindset of peace these people have.
Soloists Rich Kennedy, Tommy Lamb, Tina Mitro and Duff Watrous have outdone themselves. What a way to cover one of the most amazing songs ever? Not to mention the superb visual effects.
The masterpiece in question got 17 million YouTube views since it was posted.
Close your eyes, that’s all we’re asking you.
We bet 17 million people have already tried it and were surprised by the full rain effect. Judging by the fact the video is almost a decade old and people still watch and comment, it’s going to take a lot to take the internet community away from it.
As this clip shows, there’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do.
You get the point—people love the original approach, and we can’t wait to see more from the repertoire.
