Ice skating is a hard sport to master.
It made look easy, but it takes years of hard work and practice to nail those tricks and to get in such great shape. Skating pairs have to work even harder. They have to spend a lot of time together on the ice, learn to trust each other, and create a bond that will get them through their practices and competitions without fighting.
One pair of skaters recently wowed judges and the audience with their spectacular routine.
French figure skaters Vanessa James and Morgan Ciprés not only put on a great show at the World Team Trophy 2017 competition in Japan, they seem to be high up in the running for first place. They are not only a skating couple, but a couple outside the rink, as well.
There’s more than just gliding and leaps going on here. Vanessa has to put her complete trust in Morgan as he lifts her high above his dead, throws her out onto the ice, and holds her hand as she performs amazing tricks by his side. They are remarkable skaters on their own, but together they are amazing.
The duo performed a routine to Disturbed’s version of Simon & Garfunkel’s hit “The Sound of Silence.”
As they skated, the crowd was on the edge of their seats.
The lyrics of the song include:
“Hello darkness, my old friend,
I’ve come to talk with you again.
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone.
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp.
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking.
People hearing without listening.
People writing songs that voices never share.
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence.
‘Fools’ said I, ‘You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you.’
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said, “The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence.’”
It’s a song most people are familiar with, but not one that you think two skaters would choose for a routine.
Still, they managed to make the somewhat sad song appear upbeat with their fun and energetic routine.
Not only were the skaters graceful on the ice, they also had some impressive tricks. At one point, Morgan tosses Vanessa in the air as if she is weightless. She lands effortlessly on the ice and goes right back to the next move. Their black costumes go perfect with their music, and the simplicity of them makes their moves all the more noticeable.
Once the couple finished their routine, they received a standing ovation from the audience.
Everyone loved their amazing show. Apparently, the judges enjoy it too, because they ended up winning the event. If these two continue to skate together, they will only become better. I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing their next routine.
