Figure skating and dancing have a lot in common.
They both capture the essence of expression through movement and convey emotion in visually stunning ways.
For one pair of ice skaters, the ability to dance while on ice seems to come naturally to them.
Their names are Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron and they put together a tango rhythm dance on ice that will leave you speechless.
In the video below you can watch as the two skaters meet in the middle of the ice rink and prepare to begin their dance routine.
They put their faces and bodies against each other and wait for the music to start.
When it comes in over the speakers, the pair starts to move and glide their hands across each other before splitting apart and beginning their dance.
They stay in the same spot for a few moves, stretching and posing together, locking their bodies into beautiful arrangements.
Then they push off of the ice and begin to glide.
This is where their figure skating becomes something special to watch.
The two dancers seem to be flying together, locked in the same rhythm while moving effortlessly through space.
It’s an effect that even the best dancer on solid ground couldn’t emulate.
As they spin and glide to the music, you can see other figure skaters out on the ice, working on their own moves.
It’s a reminder of just how much practice goes into a routine like this.
And even the routine that we are watching in this video is just practice in a sense.
It wasn’t done in front of any large crowds, but it was the routine that Papadakis and Cizeron would perform later that year in competition.
This video was shot just one week before the pair left for World Team Trophy, where they would compete against other figure skating couples to see who had the best routine.
The skaters alternate between skating separately, performing the same moves at the same time, and holding each other closely, connected as one skater.
The music picks up its intensity and so do the skaters.
Cizeron picks up Papadakis and spins her around in the air while the pair picks up speed and flies along the ice.
The other skaters that were on the ice have now moved off to the sides, watching in awe as the two dancers use up every inch of ice in the rink.
Their ability to move in sync really is something special to watch.
Not only is it technically sound, but it carries emotion and sensuality as well.
They seem to be sharing time and space, completely immune to the outside world and all of its distractions.
At one point, the two skaters glide right by the onlookers at the edge of the rink.
However, they seem almost unaware of their presence.
Their ability to navigate along the ice without hitting the walls or taking a wrong turn is very impressive.
The two finish off their routine in the middle of the ice, frozen in a pose similar to how they started–faces and bodies held close to one another.
