Listening to Adele sing brings out the emotions, all the emotions.
Valentina Marchei, an Italian ice skater, chose to use the Adele song, “Someone Like You,” as her music during a performance. The strength and vulnerability in Adele’s lyrics and voice was able to amplify the strength and vulnerability of Valentina Marchei’s ice skating routine.
Valentina Marchei is a world-famous figure skater. She skates as a single, but also in a pair as well with Ondřej Hotárek. Valentina is no stranger to winning either. She has won the Italian National Championship five times as a single. She has placed in the European Championship and the World Championships. She was also chosen to represent Italy as an ice skater in the 2014 and 2018 Olympics.
When asked about ice skating she has been quoted saying,
“When I’m out on the ice, it’s my passion speaking for me.”
Valentina Marchei was competing at the Golden Skate competition when she chose to perform to Adele. Her song choice was significant as it did let her passion speak for her. Valentina’s performance is as passionate as Adele’s voice. The two complement each other very well. The passion in Valentina’s skating is amplified by the passion of Adele.
Valentina gracefully skates across the ice and it is almost like her pain is palpable.
“Golden Skate Awards are an amazing sporting event that brings together the best ice athletes from every nation,” is stated on their official Facebook page.
Valentina performed in a gorgeous black ensemble that sparked all over the ice. Valentina’s performance started off slow with the song. Valentina is so graceful it almost looks as if she is floating above the ice at times. As her performance gains speed, so does she. Valentina keeps speeding up right before she completes an impressive jump.
Valentina’s jump is met with loud applause from the crowd, they are loving her performance.
Valentina is able to amazingly demonstrate pure emotion through the moves of her arms and facial expressions. As she glides over the ice her routine includes many hand movements that will turn her body, as if her arms are guiding her entire body. After her first jump, Valentina is prepared to quickly add in more trickier skating moves.
Valentina is able to grab one of her skates from behind and hold it over her head. She then glides across the ice only on one skate, while holding this position. Her balance and grace is magnetic to watch. As her performance starts to wind down, Valentina speeds up. Instead of slowly skating across the ice, she skates quickly with turns and twists.
It does not take long for Valentina to complete another beautiful and successful jump.
As there is never a fast moment in Adele’s song, “Someone Like You,” Valentina chose not to put a grand finale moment in her choreography. Instead, she slows down and connects back to the passion and sadness in Adele’s voice and lyrics. Valentina quietly finds herself back in the center of the ice rink as she completes her gorgeous routine.
Valentina’s performance has been watched over two million times since it was uploaded. Some have commented,
“She did an awesome job and through out the video I was singing this song. Awesome job!”
“This is my ice skating’s goals.”
