Mark Lowry’s “Mary, did you know?” was written in 1984, so in terms of Christmas tunes, it’s a really young one. And yet it’s a song that’s proven to be popular as evidenced by the number of cover versions.
Here’s one by Home Free, the a cappella group of five from Mankato, Minnesota. They’re a pretty young group too, starting in 2001 and garnering lots of fans through the years.
This is pure talent.
Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Adam Rupp, Tim Foust, and Adam Chance stand in front of a digital stable hut underneath a starry sky, singing about Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The lyrics came about when Lowry had to write a script for a Christmas program in his church. He just suddenly got to thinking of what he would ask Mary during her pregnancy and after.
“I just tried to put into words the unfathomable. I started thinking of the questions I would have for her if I were to sit down & have coffee with Mary. You know, “What was it like raising God?” “What did you know?” “What didn’t you know?”
That would have been an interesting conversation to have certainly.
The song is mostly made up of questions directed to Mary, none of them answered.
Many other churches, pastors, and priests have questioned the ambiguity of Lowry’s lyrics, plus its lack of scriptural and theological depth. But to those out to enjoy the holidays, it’s a song that brings all the Christmas feels around!
Everyone’s got their favorite Christmas carol. Is this one of them?
Home Free just impresses with the blending of each member’s voices. If only we could sing like these fine gentlemen. Singing in the shower or the car doesn’t count!
“What an incredible arrangement!! I mean, we already knew this was going to be great, but they never cease to amaze us! Beautiful angelic voices ❤️ Also, can we take a moment to appreciate Adam’s bass in this one??” says Elli P.
Good job, Adam!
That’s not an actual band you’re hearing. Those are their voices doing everything from the beat, the melody, and backup.
It takes a lot of confidence to sing a cappella. Talent is talent.
It’s incredible how Home Free brings this relaxing vibe to a song that’s more often than not done in a solemn manner. And don’t be fooled, these guys are super talented.
Viewer Toni Henry loved this cover so much,
“I love this song so much Mark Lowry created a masterpiece when he wrote this song and Home Free just took it to the next level those harmonies Home Free is the kings of harmonies they are unbeatable in their harmonies just fantastic.”
What’s not to love? It’s great!
