The most popular and generation-defying song that rock gods Queen have ever put out, is arguably “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Ok scrap that, it’s not arguable, it’s an immutable fact. To prove this point, take a look at the below image. Tell me you can’t HEAR this song when you look at that infamous spotlit lineup. Just a quick glance makes the words SCARAMOUCHE and FANDANGO burst into your brain like popcorn.
The song is highly influential too, inspiring generation after generation to embrace the song in all manner of performances.
Can anybody else do such an iconic song justice?
If they’re a stellar group of singers in a highly talented high school choir, then the answer is yes! It’s a sizeable choir, let by one singer front and centre. He’s got a great voice and apart from one, let’s say sticky note at the very beginning of his part, he sounds great in Freddie’s place.
Like I said…It’s a large choir.
They add a huge weight to the song, lending it gravitas and power. It’s a talented bunch, and they throw themselves into the song with admirable enthusiasm. They offer tremendous support to our Freddie as he does his thing and rocks out to the classic hit.
This young Freddie Mercury really pours his heart into it.
I wonder if they had decided to give this talented chap the spotlight to do whatever song he wanted, or if they held try-outs for Freddie’s lead part and this guy won out. I could believe either as it seems like this lad has a real passion for the song and gets a real thrill from it.
Of course, if Queen are the…queens…of rock, then you can’t short change us on the rock band!
So they’ve supplied a full band to cover that essential part. While Bohemian Rhapsody is known for its singing (sometimes very over-the-top singing!), it is in the end the collective brilliance of Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Meddows Taylor.
If those are the members of Queen, then this close runner up should be called Princess, because they come very close to the throne indeed.
And of course… the moment everyone waits for… The rock breakdown.
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me…for me…for meeeeeee! I challenge you to stay in your seat when this part of the song hits! Of course, the kids of the choir know what to do. They all simultaneously engage in a collective head bang. Except for one girl in a blue scarf who I guess just isn’t the head-banging type.
Even the conductor is a rocker at heart.
I reckon this fella would have been right into Queen in his day. He has such enthusiasm for the song that I wouldn’t be surprised if this song choice wasn’t his idea in the first place. It’s clear that even if that is the case, these kids are way into the song. Thus, my point is proven. Generation after generation adore this song above all others.
