Harry Styles is an English singer, songwriter, and actor whose musical career began in 2010 when he auditioned on the British music competition series The X Factor.
Later on, he became a member of the boy band One Direction. Even though those are well-known facts, what most people don’t know is that Styles is a huge classic rock fan. More specifically, he loves Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and thinks “it’s the best-mixed song ever.”
He loved the song so much that he even performed it live on the Howard Stern Show.
For the interview, Styles showed up with his band.
The popular singer revealed how much he loves “Sledgehammer” and Peter Gabriel, adding that his whole album is incredible. He even tells a story about Peter Gabriel’s music studio in England and how amazing it is.
As it turns out, Styles even recorded some songs in Gabriel’s studio.
In his story, he explains that he and his band felt the urge to blast “Sledgehammer” in there so badly as soon as they stepped in… and that’s how first the idea of covering the famous song appeared. This video was their first public performance of the song, and they nailed it completely.
When it came out, “Sledgehammer” was a No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in 1986.
It even spent four weeks as a No.1 hit in Canada as well. In case you forgot, Styles and his band remind everyone of how great the song is. “Sledgehammer” has been described as dance-rock, blue-eyed soul and funk. In any case, Styles managed to perfectly catch the funk vibe perfectly, and we can only say that our hats are off for this amazing cover.
You can tell Styles is a fan of the song, and this version is very faithful to the original.
We also have to mention the perfect audio on The Howard Stern Show—he must be having some epic audio engineers.
Everything about this cover is pure entertainment, and we’re glad to see Styles performing a song we would never expect to hear him sing. The whole band is sensational, but the drummer also has a huge impact. She nukes this from orbit and plays the song perfectly to fit Harry’s singing! We would love it if Styles and his band put out a whole album of covers from the 70s and 80s. Judging from this performance, it would suit their style perfectly.
When it comes to Styles’ latest work, the singer is working on his new songs.
He has already released two albums as a solo performer and his second studio album Fine Line broke the record in 2019 as the biggest sales debut from an English male artist in the US. Abbreviated as TPWK, the slogan “Treat People With Kindness” is Styles’ choice to promote his message of love, acceptance and kindness to people.
To mark World Mental Health Day, Styles even launched a website called “Do You Know Who You Are?”
It gives users positive randomized messages of love and support that end with “TPWK. LOVE, H.” For fans of Styles, this kind of positive support must feel so great to have—the whole thing is a noble and brilliant idea. We could watch this performance again and again!
