There are some songs that just instantly make you want to get up and groove. Does any particular one come to mind?
Some songs are perfectly upbeat and can transport you to a place where you’ve nothing left to do but smile. They are happy songs, the ones that remind us to stop being so serious all the time and celebrate instead.
One such song that comes to mind is the hit single “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
Just one listen to this effortlessly cheery tune will have you moving your feet in no time.
The next thing you know you’re dancing, and the next thing you realize after that? Yes—you’re happy too.
The power of the song comes from how deliciously contagious it is. Released in 2013, Pharell got the song down just right for the movie ‘Despicable Me 2’. He confessed that being tasked with writing a song for such a perpetually grumpy character (Gru) was a steep climb all its own. In fact, it apparently took the singer-songwriter nine attempts to craft the hit that he did. On the tenth attempt, he knew he was on to something.
Pharell admitted during the creative conference Brilliant Minds in Stockholm:
“When I do a song, if my wife is there at the studio with me, we’ll leave and then we’ll listen to it one time when we’re out. So we listened to [Happy] and we ended up driving round for an hour and a half [listening to it] and we were like, I don’t know what this is, but it feels good.”
“Happy” is your go-to for a feel-good song.
Going on to become a wildly successful hit, “Happy” reads (or listens) like a giant hug and a warm and soulful friend.
It has a genuine Motown vibe and grooves well on repeat. Perhaps the best part? There are no hidden messages. The song is simply about maintaining a positive outlook. If you can keep a sunny disposition, nothing in life will seem that gloomy.
And it’s no surprise many music artists have gone on to embrace and cover this song. Take funk band Scary Pockets, for example.
As if this song couldn’t groove any more, they deliver a funky cover jam that really drives it home!
Scary Pockets is a Los Angeles based band comprised of Ryan Lerman and Jack Conte, as well as whatever other talent is nearby in the moment.
Together they release weekly music videos on YouTube, where they’ve amassed quite the following—to the tune of 612,000 subscribers.
Their cover of Pharrell’s “Happy” is a smooth session, breathing inspiring new life into the hit single.
With a reinvented sound but the same soul, the band matches the song’s original vibration with a creative spin all their own.
And they’re not the only ones keen on this groovy creation.
Since being uploaded, their video has almost two million views and 25,000 likes. People are genuinely here for the good times!
With one viewer commenting:
“When the original is already funky and you don’t imagine it could get any funkier.”
But imagine no more! Scary Pockets is fresh on the scene with an even fresher beat.
