The 90’s were a potent time for punchy pop music.
It was a time when Ricky Martin, the Spice Girls and Britney Spears were all sharing radio time. Everybody remembers the Macarena, Ice Ice Baby and plenty of other tunes that have turned iconic in the soft light of nostalgia. Still, one of the unavoidable hits of the 90’s was made by a band of three brothers, all of whom were younger than 18 at the time.
If you haven’t guessed yet, we’re talking about the blonde-haired boys of Hanson.
Just in case you didn’t know, Hanson is very much still a band.
Although their heydey was clearly in the 90s, they released a new album as recently as 2013 and continue to do appearances together. One appearance, in particular, has been making the rounds as of late. In it, the three brothers get together once again to perform their hit single, “MMMBop.” Though there’s no way you could fail to recognize this song if you were alive during that 90’s, here’s a little refresher video just in case:
To stoke the world’s nostalgia, Hanson recently performed an acoustic version of their song in an ABC special.
When “MMMBop” first came out, it went number one in more than 30 different countries. Still, the original was a little bit limited in terms of vocals just by how incredibly young the three brothers were. In this version, Hanson brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac are 33, 31 and 28, respectively. As the video shows, the brothers’ voices have matured quite a bit over the years.
After watching this performance, it’s easy to see why the world fell in love with this song in the first place.
Since being loaded onto YouTube, the video has three-and-a-half million views (and more on other outlets).
No matter what your opinion of Hanson, nobody can deny that the song is catchy and that the brothers’ vocal abilities have only gotten better with age. Hearing a more stripped-down, acoustic version of the song is a fun change from the sleek original version as well. Don’t blame yourself if you notice that you’re singing along (or that you still know every word). Although they say it’s not ideal to live in the past, it’s nice to take a break sometimes and indulge in the nostalgia.
A special salute to the Hanson brothers—you guys have still got it!
