There are hundreds, if not thousands, of performances covering Queen’s legendary hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,”. But it’s not very often that the song is transformed into an ice-skating routine.
Attendees of the Canadian Synchronized Skating Championship got quite the show when the NEXXICE Senior team dazzled everyone with their take on the 70s classic.
British rock band Queen formed in 1970, but their songs are still very much alive. One hit that will never go out of style is “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
According to The Guardian, “Bohemian Rhapsody” was awarded the title of “the most streamed song from the 20th century.” It also sits as #166 on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list.
With how legendary the tune is, it’s no surprise that the NEXXICE Senior skating team chose it for their performance.
The results were pure magic.
For their routine, the skaters follow along with the famous genre shifts of “Bohemian Rhapsody” beginning with the a cappella opening. They glide across the ice with slow, graceful movements that match up to the rhythm.
This is truly mesmerizing.
When the song changes over to Freddie Mercury’s ballad, the 16 skaters glide around the ice rink in a group.
After Freddie sings the iconic lyrics, “I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all,” four of the team members are lifted into the air in splits causing the crowd to cheer in amazement.
This isn’t the first time NEXXICE Seniors have melted the ice with their impressive routines.
On their Facebook page, they explain:
“NEXXICE Senior Synchronized skating team is the first Canadian team in history to be crowned the title of World Synchronized Skating Champions in April 2009 and again in April 2015. In 2007, 2008 and 2016, NEXXICE earned the title of world bronze medallists and are currently the reigning 11-time National Champions.”
Get ready for another “twist.”
The opera section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” is undoubtedly a crowd favorite. Its nonsensical lyrics and impressive vocal sounds have people singing along from the shower to the car.
To go along with the operatic nature of the music, the athletes perform moves that suit the legendary song. They spin in repeated circles and glide together in a snake-like line, keeping everyone’s eyes glued to the ice.
Rock and roll on ice!
When the rock section of “Bohemian Rhapsody” comes on, the skaters speed up as well. The crowd loves it!
The one male skater of the group does a handstand while his fellow teammates hold his legs high in the air. It’s rock and roll on ice and you bet they did the song justice.
As Freddie Mercury once said:
“You can do what you want with my music, but don’t make me boring.”
Fortunately, the NEXXICE Senior skating team’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” performance is anything but “boring.” This was a highly-energized routine that complements the tune in a beautiful, hypnotizing way. Queen would be proud. And Freddie would be cheering them on.
