Grandparents are great teachers.
Not only do they connect us to our lineage, but they can teach us a lot about life, since they’ve lived so long!
For these grandparents, Clive and Fay Gordes, they can teach all of us the lesson of letting go and just having fun.
These grandparents show how to get through quarantine with these hip dance moves.
Watch them break out into these legendary country dance moves
This couple is dancing to the song by Dwight Yoakam’s These Arms.
From the looks of the video, they spent a lot of time putting together and practicing this dance. The pair is really killing it!
They are clearly having a ton of fun smiling and laughing through the video. One thing is for sure:
They look like they are having a blast together dancing through quarantine
Dwight Yoakam is a Kentucky-born country musician from the 1980s.
He’s still well loved and widly celebrated today, not to mention he’s released an album as recently as 2016!
The song itself is from his album A Long Way Home, released in ’98. Yoakam has gone platinum and gold on his albums multiple times and has won myriad awards in country music.
You could say he knows what he’s doing
Sadly, young Yoakam didn’t fit the view of what 1980’s Nashville wanted.
He wasn’t marketable enough as he didn’t fit the new “urban cowboy” aesthetic of country music.
He appeared far out country, too honky-tonk, too hillbilly for the market.
1980’s Nashville made the wrong call and they should’ve signed young Yoakam because it wouldn’t stop him
Thankfully, these rejections enabled Yoakam to play by his own rules and mess around with country as we know it, while still returning it to its rural roots and proving Nashville wrong!
Still, Yoakam had to leave Nashville if it meant making it big, since they were so focussed on the widely dreaded pop-country that very few people actually enjoy.
I get appealing to a niche market but like… C’mon guys, what happened there?
Yoakam moved to LA to find a better audience for his music and ended up playing in the same bars and clubs as a lot of punk bands, where the unlikely, niche audiences of “cowpunks” followed his budding career and helped propel him to where he is today!
On this topic of punkies and rockers loving his music, Allmusic writes:
“Appropriately, his core audience was composed mainly of roots rock and rock & roll fans, not the mainstream country audience. Nevertheless, he was frequently able to chart in the country Top Ten, and he remained one of the most respected and adventurous recording country artists well into the ’90s.”
It makes you wonder what kinds of scenes these two grandparents were visiting in their haydays!
Although, judging by the moves they’re bustin’ out and the fun they’re having, I might argue that their hayday is here and now!
Were they some of these cowpunks? Or do they just know good music when they hear it?
No matter the case, we’re happy they’re willing to show off their square dancing!
This couple has already uploaded a series of these “dancing during quarantine” videos.
