“Dance Monkey” is a song by Australian artist Tones and I.
It was released in 2019 and has already topped the official singles chart in over 30 countries. Have you seen the music video? It’s hilarious—the singer is disguised as a charming grandpa who dominates the neighborhood with a pink hat and an adorable grandpa squad. Nice idea, right? As it turns out, it inspired this pianist to do a similar stunt.

You have an expected scenario: a public piano, an unsuspecting crowd and a pianist who is about to blow everyone away with his skills. The only twist is the way he’s dressed. We feel like he just tried to pay homage to the original song, he wasn’t trying to fool everyone that he’s a real grandpa. That’s what makes the video so funny. You know it’s a mask, but you’ll laugh anyway!
The adventurous artist is Terry Miles from England, who regularly posts piano lessons on his YouTube channel.
The self-proclaimed Boogie Woogie Piano Teacher has 235,000 subscribers, and you can email him directly if you want more detailed instructions on “how to match up both the left and right hand so they can marry and play together.”
After seeing his videos, Terry’s way of playing the piano is certainly original.
As the clip begins, the camera is already focused on Terry.
He’s at the piano, and people instantly gather around him. The guy is charismatic, even behind the mask! The way he approaches the piano and his attitude all make it seem sure that you’re about to see a phenomenal show.
It’s not only about playing the piano—Terry’s dance that will make you laugh until you cry!
The fellow starts jumping up and down while playing the piano. The funniest part is that his jumping looks a lot like a monkey’s dance, and it doesn’t get in the way of his playing at all.
Terry is in his own groove—he’s just warmed up, and the more that the crow cheers, the funnier his performance becomes.
We wish we could have seen it in person! This grandpa is going to be the reason you’ll learn the monkey dance.
“Dance Monkey” broke the record for most weeks at number one on the chart by an Australian act, and it also holds the record for the longest time at number one across Australian singles charts.
The song was the sixth highest-ranked global digital single of 2019.
We doubt that there’s anyone who hasn’t heard the song so far, and it was a nice choice for a public, funny performance.
The only thing better than this would be if a real grandpa came and stole the show.
Since it was released, more than 12 million people have seen this clip of Terry playing the piano.
