Though it goes without saying at this point, singing competition shows have swept the entire world.
Although the craze started with American Idol as far back as 2002, now it’s hard to look anywhere without seeing these shows. In America alone, we have The X Factor, American Idol, The World’s Best, America’s Got Talent and The Voice.
Still, what not everybody knows is that nearly all of these series also have their international counterparts—and in case you didn’t guess, all of them are just as talented as what we see at home!
With that in mind, we’d like to show you an extraordinary clip from The Voice Kids in the Netherlands.
Much like The Voice, The Voice Kids is a singing competition show with two different tiers of competition happening.
Though the kids go head-to-head with each other to see who is the best singer and performer, the judges also go head-to-head by picking out the best contestants, building the best team, coaching them and winning the show overall.
Although many of the talents that appear on The Voice Kids are still finding their footing and their voice, sometimes a performer comes out who is so confident and mature that nobody can believe it.
One little girl named Britney was just one of those performers.
Because the show relies on blind auditions, the performance begins with Britney walking out onstage while the judges have their backs turned.
When it all starts, there’s some quiet piano playing in the background—and then Britney’s voice hits. What’s most striking about it is how confident and assured she is in terms of tone and delivery almost immediately! After a moment, it’s clear that the song she’s singing is “Zombie” by The Cranberries, though nobody has heard it like this before. Although the original is more of a quiet-to-loud punk rock performance, Britney gives it a whole new soaring and soulful energy.
Before long, two of the judges have already smashed their buttons!
As the song goes on, it only builds in intensity—and Britney matches it easily.
On the high notes and the louder shouts, she meets them so easily! At the end of the performance, she takes a bow and the whole crowd bursts into applause. Even though Britney is Dutch, she was able to sing the entire song in English so fluently and smoothly that someone unfamiliar with the show might not have ever known!
Needless to say, this is one of the most watched clips from The Voice Kids channel with more than 31 million view on YouTube.
Although we have plenty of these reality musical competition shows to choose from, clips like this prove there’s still so much talent out there we don’t know about.
Because of the way the world works, it can sometimes be hard to find an avenue to express yourself and explore your talents. If you come from a well-off family and have access to technology, you can upload your performances online—but there’s still no guarantee that they’ll be seen by the right people.
The best thing about shows like The Voice and The Voice Kids is that they bring these unique talents to a bigger platform where the whole world can discover them. Though it goes without saying, we’ll definitely be seeing more from Britney in the future.
