Even so, the truth is all kinds of people like all kinds of different music, and we shouldn’t judge people on our surface assumptions—and this video is a perfect example.
In this clip, a young girl who wears a hijab plays one of the heaviest Metallica songs like a pro!
It’s clear that she was born to shred on guitar.
Meliani Siti Sumertini is a 22-year-old Indonesian woman who enjoys exploring music and playing guitar.
She is extremely talented and it shows on her YouTube channel—she has almost half a million YouTube subscribers and covers many different bands. Some of her videos include performances from Iron Maiden, Slayer, Muse, Rage Against The Machine, Avenged Sevenfold and System Of A Down.
The girl simply nails every song she decides to play, and the progress she delivers with each newly uploaded video is simply unbelievable.
The girl is a self-taught guitarist, but she’s also involved in visual design. Even if you don’t prefer metal, don’t worry—Mel can play many different styles, including relaxing instrumentals.
In all, this video is a perfect lesson of why we should let people’s interests and talents speak for themselves.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if everyone perceived metal fans like this?
Without a doubt, Mel is paving the way for plenty of other girls to come.
As we scrolled through the comments section a bit, we saw that there were plenty of other girls who wear hijab just like Meliani who felt encouraged by her video to try out something new. Needless to say, metal music has a reputation as a genre for big tough guys, or as something that not everyone can like. By performing like this with a rainbow-themed outfit on, Mel flips a lot of stereotypes on their head all at once.
But also—can we focus on how great her guitar playing is?
The 1986 hit “Master of Puppets” is not an easy song, but Mel makes the whole thing seem breezy and nearly effortless.
Even for people who don’t Metallica very well, there’s a good chance they recognize this tune from the radio. Throughout her cover, Mel doesn’t miss a note—and the same thing goes for all of her videos. We’re guessing that Kirk Hammett, Metallica’s all-too-famous lead guitarist, is definitely proud of her for repping their music so well..
