Michael Jackson was a giant in the development of music during the 20th century, but he wasn’t known only for his singing. He was also a talented dancer, bringing new ways of moving into popular culture.
Now, one little dancer is doing his legacy proud with her own routine, set to Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel.
Cami Voorhees might’ve been a tiny little girl when she performed the routine in 2015, but her talent and attitude were larger than life.
From the moment Cami came onstage, it was clear she was in a league of her own. She has a talent and poise beyond most dancers her age. Dressed in a red jacket with gold banding and black leggings, she pirouetted, boogied, and somersaulted her way across the stage like she owned it.
Her boundless enthusiasm and energy made the routine a pleasure to watch.
And it was clear the audience loved it. They cheered throughout her routine, unable to hold back their applause.
But what made Cami really amazing to watch was how much she enjoyed performing. It was clear she loved the music, mouthing along to the lyrics that she knew so well. She danced with an attitude reminiscent of Jackson himself. This little girl had no end of confidence.
Once her performance was uploaded to the internet, people online couldn’t get enough of her.
“Her energy is amazing!!” said one commenter. “And she is one of the only young child that does not just do skills, they are all together, her technique is on point her leg are incredible!! And that choreography is fire!” [sic]
Cami had it all — the energy, the gymnastic skill, and the dance moves.
Her performance moved smoothly from dancing to tumbling as she did a headstand followed by a cartwheel.
“What an impressive little dancer – and looking at some of her home videos, her personality is just as impressive,” said another commenter.
“Super confident & she should be with the skills she has. The choreo was masterfully done too. What a performance. I bet Abby [Lee Miller of “Dance Moms”] has been burning up the wires trying to get her – and if her parents are smart, Abby never will.”
Cami began taking ballet when she was very young.
The dance classes were an attempt to correct a birth defect that caused her leg to dramatically turn in. It just so happened to be the perfect calling for her.
Cami was only seven years old during the performance. Since then, she’s made a name for herself after auditioning for the sixth season of “Dance Moms” and winning a host of dance titles. She won The Dance Awards 2018 Best Dancer and was invited to tour with faculty to teach others.
She continues to dance and compete along with her sister Bella. There’s no telling where the now-11-year-old will go, but it’s clear the sky’s the limit.
