Britain’s Got Talent provides a great platform for all kinds of emerging talent—but few contestants are as adorable as Giorgia Borg.
For anyone who doesn’t know, Borg is a 10-year-old girl originally from Malta. Though she’d long been interested in singing and performing, she hadn’t had much exposure before appearing on the show. In fact, one of the judges even asks her if the studio audience is the largest audience she’s ever sung in front of before—and she nervously says yes!
Aside from being such a young contestant, there’s still something else that sets Borg apart from the talent pool.
Though many people go on the show and do covers of famous songs or play while they sing, Borg took a different approach.
Instead of doing someone else’s music, Borg tells that judges that she’ll be performing an original song that she wrote herself. As it turns out, the song is called “Ten,” presumably after her own age! The judges ask her what the song is about, and Borg replies that it’s about the experience of being a child and having adults around who don’t listen to you.
Of course, she’s quick to qualify that it’s definitely not inspired by her own parents!
After a few more comments, the judges wish her good luck and she gets started.
The song begins with some light guitar strumming as Borg gets ready. Just as promised, the lyrics cut quickly to the core subject matter that she described:
“Just because I’m ten doesn’t mean I don’t mean what I say.”
What’s also immediately noticeable is that Borg’s lyrics are delicate and revealing—and her voice is soulful and surprisingly controlled for someone so young. Once the judges realize what they’re seeing, the audience is quickly on her side. Borg breaks out some dance moves and continues onto the chorus as the crowd’s cheers begin to swell.
Still, she hasn’t even hit the top of her range yet.
By the end of the song, Borg is belting out her own lyrics just as well as any contemporary pop diva!
The audience gets louder and louder as the song goes on and the judges are clearly in awe of what they’re seeing. Throughout the process, Borg hits a series of incredible notes and the entire audience has their jaws on the floor.
Once she hits her last note, all the judges and audience members rise to their feet to give Borg a standing ovation.
Needless to say, Borg has the biggest smile on her face and couldn’t be happier.
After it’s all over, it’s time for the judges’ comments and decision.
First up is Simon, who can’t believe what he’s heard. Because Simon has his own five-year-old son, he says, he’s very experienced with listening to children—and says he learns quite a bit from his son. Typically speaking, all of the judges would get a chance to deliberate and discuss before a final decision is made. In this case, Alesha can’t wait.
Before anyone has a chance to weigh in, Alesha smashes the Golden Buzzer!
As it turns out, Borg is the youngest solo act on Britain’s Got Talent to ever get the coveted Golden Buzzer!
As soon as it happens, the confetti starts to fall and Borg is in tears. The entire audience is up on their feet and the energy in the room is undeniable. Still, Borg’s talent is so powerful and her lyrics clearly touched everyone in the room. After all is said and done, Alesha still needs to get a few last comments in:
“It takes a lot to really, really move me, and you floored me.”
Alesha is clearly completely in love with Borg’s performance—but after seeing what she does onstage, it’s hard not to be.
Although we all dream of getting the chance to share our talents with the world and be recognized, it usually takes us a while to come into our own or to find our voice. In the case of Borg, her talents seem so fully formed at such a young age that it’s a bit of a shock! Needless to say, Borg is already a star in the making and we can all expect big things from her in the future.
Congratulations Georgia and thanks for an inspiring performance! Check out the full video below:
