As far as classic rock songs go, there are few that are as well known as Sweet Child o’ Mine! Recorded in the ’80s by Guns and Roses, the song is a constant, especially during the summer months in America. While the song and band are famous themselves, there is a special element to the song itself that people just can’t get enough of. The opening riff!
The opening guitar riff is probably the most popular part of the song.
Some songs are known for small pieces within them (Sweet Caroline, In The Air Tonight, etc.) and Sweet Child o’ Mine is one of them! With one of the most famous guitar players in history writing the riff, it seems to make sense, too. Slash wrote the opening lines of the song originally as a warm-up that then found its way into the song by complete accident.
What is the complete opposite of classic rock? Polka!
One of the most beautiful things about music is its ability to be translated, covered, and remade with different influences. With a song as popular as Sweet Child o’ Mine, it’s no wonder that people from around the world have taken it and made their own versions of it.
A German Polka band named “The Heimatdamisch” decided to do their own cover.
This German polka band is known for their famous covers of popular songs. Their unique take on such culturally different songs is so different that you can’t help but enjoy it. This example is no different!
The scene is set in something distinctly NOT classic rock.
Located in a wooden cabin with red linen curtains and a crew of polka ready musicians is not what you expect to see at all. Regardless, they kick off the song by launching into that all too familiar intro riff – only this time, it’s on a trumpet!
Getting through the opening, the rest of the band joins in.
With a clarinet, trombone, drumkit, and accordion, this is one merry group! The song is performed differently, for sure, but it’s still that familiar classic. As the horn section swings back and forth playing the upbeat melody, the walking back and forth of the trombone reminds you that this is definitely polka!
The singer is special, too!
While many are used to hearing the vocals of Axl Rose, this polka version has that covered, too! Conny Kreitmeier is the lead singer of the group and is dressed the part! After the opening parts, she smiles and launches into the verse with a special voice that fits perfectly with her polka roots. Dressed in the classic floral dress, skirt, and white shirt, you almost want to have a beer and pretzel while you enjoy the performance.
The entire band is incredibly talented.
Nearing the end of their performance, we get to the part that many have been waiting on – the solo! Instead of a guitar, they have an incredible saxophonist who absolutely kills the part. After the solo, the band drops into the slower part and build, eventually growing to huge vocals that really allows the vocalist to show off! Suddenly, they hit an incredible walk-down and finish the song off.
If you enjoy classic rock, polka, or music in general, you have to check this out!
P.S. – See if you can find the man eating a sandwich through the entire thing!
