Flash mobs have become really popular in the past few years, and I can’t lie— I’m a big fan of them. If you’re not familiar with the term, a flash mob is when a group of people do a synchronized public performance designed to surprise and delight the people around them. You know how some say they wish people would break out into random songs and dances like in the movies? Well, flash mobbers are making it happen.

Most flash mobs consist of dancing. A group of seemingly unconnected people will be milling about a public area, when all of a sudden you hear the music start and the dancing begin. Oftentimes, people slowly trickle into the performance, joining at different intervals to create a veritable dancing brigade.

The following flash mob takes a different approach though.

Organized by the eG-KG in partnership with the German Hans Sachs Choir and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Nuremberg, the flash mob takes place outside a local church in Nuremberg, Germany.

The opening scenes show a crowded courtyard, with people of all ages enjoying the weather. The camera eventually focuses in on a sophisticatedly-clad male bassist who watches as a young girl approaches him with a recorder. Without saying a word, the child looks up at the man and plays Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”.

For those not familiar with classical music, it’s the melody used for the memorable “Drink Milk, Love Live” campaign.

After the girl finishes her tune, without a word, the man plays it back to her on the bass. The two then begin to play the song in its entirety. Within the span of a few notes, another woman drags up a chair and starts to play along too.

As the song and video progresses, you see more and more musicians joining in on the performance…

At roughly 3:50, a choir emerges and begins singing the song’s lyrics in a crisp, powerful voice. It’s all really amazing to see.
