This is one dance that will leave you in awe but with a little bit of confusion.
The Men’s Ballet of Krofdorf-Gleiberg, Germany choreographed a “Black and White Panty Hose Dance” that created an optical illusion within their dance. Their choreography is already set to a fun and upbeat tune, which makes the optical illusion even more fun to watch. This is going to be one dance that you watch more than once to figure out what is really happening.
The Men’s Ballet of Krofdorf-Gleiberg cut and sewed their own black and white costumes to create their illusion. Their individual costumes were half white and half black. Then they would share pantyhose with the dancers next to them. Each dancer would only put one leg into a white panty hose and one leg in a black panty hose.
This created the illusion that each dancer was sharing a set of legs between each other.
Watching their dance will leave all viewers entranced. Their feet work looks as if there is a third person between every dancer, when really there is not. The choreography at its core is pretty simple. Every dancer is kicking up one leg at a time or only walking back and forth but adding in the costumes creates a dance that does not look simple in the least.
Where does each dancer begin and where does each dancer end?
At times in the dance it looks as if a dancer is swinging both his legs back and forth in mid-air.
When really each dancer is only swinging one leg. The creativity that this men’s dance group was able to choreograph into a single dance is astonishing. The stage they are performing on is a bit small for all the dancers, so this group created a fun dance that could fit into their stage space.
The dance is completely meant for the audience to watch their legs and feet. Their upper bodies have no choreography, as all their arms are intertwined together for the optical illusion effect. During the middle of the dance, the music starts to pick up and this is where the dance really begins to move.
As the beat of the music fastens, so do the legs of the dancers.
When their legs are starting to move at a faster pace, it is harder to keep track of which legs are whose and which legs make up an illusion. The dancers start to not only kick out their legs but move their legs in all directions. This makes the illusion even harder to keep track of!
The audience is loving every second of the dance!
They are not only cheering the dancers on, they are clapping in beat to the music too. If it is this fascinating to watch the dance virtually, it must have been even better in person. There is not a moment during their dance that the audience is not cheering and screaming them on.
Make sure to wait until the very end. These dancers know how to bring such a fun dance to an even better close. They are not only kicking their legs out, they fall to the ground and kick their legs up. Their ending is almost reminiscent to a burlesque dance at the end.
Watch the full performance below and try to keep track of what is real and what is an illusion.
