Music-making isn’t easy… or is it?

You need to know a lot about audio editing and rhythm. You have to be able to read notes, have some knowledge about vocals and instruments and plenty more. Even though that’s what most of us think, Australian comedy group Axis of Awesome showed their audience through a sketch that they needed nothing more than four chords to make a catchy, popular song.

The Axes of Awesome was an Australian musical comedy act with Jordan Raskopoulos, Lee Naimo, and Benny Davis.

The trio used to describe themselves as the world’s most awesome comedy band and they performed from 2006 to 2018. This video is from the 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. As the clip begins, the colorful lights on the stage reveal three musicians: a guitarist, a keyboard player, and a singer. They introduce themselves as a comedy rock band who have never had a hit. Of course, they know the reason why: it’s because they’ve never written the “four-chord song.”

If you’re asking what a four-chord song is, don’t worry—the same question was on our mind, too. Everything gets much clearer as soon as they start to sing. We could say that this becomes the hit song they’d. been waiting for!

As their performance shows, you only need to have a little bit of musical knowledge to put everything in such a funny order.

These three guys made probably one of the most famous chord sequences on the internet.

Comedy was taken to a whole new level with this video! Benny, the keyboard player, starts to sing “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, then switches to “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt, which is then followed by Alphaville’s “Forever Young.” It becomes pretty obvious what they meant by four chords, and the audience gets to hear the similarity between songs. The tracks keep on coming, people in the audience love it, and we just have to appreciate how they never fall out of tune—even though the songs switch every five to 10 seconds.

Throughout the process, they take a hilarious approach to all the songs we love.

Wouldn’t it be perfect if we only needed four chords to perform almost every song we like?

There’s definitely a lot more to song-writing than just four chords, but the way these guys blur everything together will inspire you to try it out. It’s comical, original, simple and purely artistic.
